Q First Things First Getting information before you register Ifyou have recently been admitted to a degree or certificate program, and are beginning your studies at UMass Boston, you should already have been informed aboutthe processthrough which you will choose courses and begin registration. Ifyou believe thatyou need more information, check with the Undergraduate Admissions Office at 617.287,6100 (ifyou are an undergraduate) orwith your program director (ifyou are a graduate student). Ifyou are a continuing student enrolled in a degree or certificate program, the University has sent you important information you will need for registration. The information inc—ludes yourstudent ID number, your personal identification number(PIN), and your "access period" that is, the period during which you are eligible to register. As a rule, the more credits you have accumulated, the earlier the access period will begin. Ifyou are concerned becauseyou haven't received this information, checkwith the Undergraduate Registrar's Office at 617.287.6200 orthe Graduate Registrar's Office at 617.287,6401. You should also be sure, before you register, to discussyour course selections and academic require- ments with an appropriate advisorfrom the University Advising Center oryourcollege, major depart- ment, or graduate program. Ifyou are an undergraduate in the College of Public and Community Service (CPCS) oryou wantto registerfora CPCS course, please seethe information on page 25. Registration proce- dures for CPCS differfrom those described in this publication, and involve advising in the CPCS Student Services Office and on-line registration. Ifyou wantto study at UMass Boston without seeking a degree or certificate, please seethe "Information for Non-Degree Students" on page 28. You arewelcome to take nearly any course as long as you are academically prepared for it and space is available (for graduate courses, you will need permission from the graduate program director). You mayalso be able to apply credits you have earned to degree or certificate requirements. What information you wiii need in order to register Afteryou have chosen your courses, be sure you know your access period (the period during which you can initiate registration, or add and drop courses) your student ID number your PIN (confidential personal identification number) the schedule number of each course section, including laboratory and discussion sessions, for which you wish to register. You should also be aware ofthe number of credits for each course. When to piace your caii The touch-tone registration system operates Mondays through Thursdays, 9:00am-9:00pm; Fridays, 9:00am-4:45pm; and Sundays, 10:00am-9:00pm. The system is not available on Saturdays. To registerorto add ordrop a course ifyou are a continuing student, call no laterthan September 11. Ifyou have not alreadyconferredwith the appropriate advisor, be sureto doso. ifyou are a newstudent, call afterconferringwith the appropriateadvisor, and no laterthan September 11 To make or change a pass/fail selection, call no later than November 4. To register, you must havethe information indicated bythe shaded boxes below. We recommend thatyou usethese boxestowrite it down. To avoid mistakes orconflicts, and to make a record ofyourchoices, you should alsowrite down the department name, course and section number, credits, and day and timeforeach course. Please note! A noticeconfirming yourregistration will be mailed toyou a week beforeclasses begin. If you have been movedfrom awaiting listtoan official class list, the noticewill indicatethis. Ifa course doesnotappearin yourconfirmation notice, you are notregisteredforthe course. Ifyou arestill interested intakingthecourse, followthe procedureforadding coursesdescribed above. Ifyou are usingthetouch- tonesystem and thesystem indicatesthatnospaceisavailable, butyou needtotakethecoursetofulfill critical requirements, pleasecontactthedepartmentofferingthecourse. Ifyou areseekingthe instructor's authorizationtotakeacoursein oneoftheareaslistedabove,theinstructor'sdecisionwill befinal. Remember! You arefinancially responsiblefor anycourse(s)for which you remain registered after September 11. You are expected to attend all scheduled classes.
