In their t hird season of Division I play, it appears that LaMandre has the Terrapins ready to t ake some really big st eps. Based on the first t wo seasons' results, it appears that LaMandre is well on her way to building a championship-st yle t eam at the University of Maryland. With a roster that included 16 underclassmen, and no aide ofa thletic scholarships, Maryland finished its initial Division I campaign with a 15-33 record wit hout t he aide of athletic scholarships. The second season under LaMandre was even more promising. The Terrapins improved from a 15- 33 inaugural season record to a 33-24 -1 mark last season. The Maryland pitching st aff combined for a nation-best 0.82 ERA. with freshman Kelly Shipman post ing the second-best ERA in the nation (0.51). The efforts paid off in the end with LaMandre garnering Speedline/NSCA Coach of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic region, and Shipman earning Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year honors. Prior to her arrival in College Park, LaMandre was an assistant coach at Massachusett s fo~ eight seasons. Her primary responsibilit ies included developing t he pitching st aff and t he recruit ing of student-athletes. LaMandre's involvement in softball dates back to her playing days at Trenton St ate College where she was a t wo-time All-American in 1984 and '85, and was named Trenton State's Female At hlete of the Year in 1985. She served her alma mater as pitching coach and strength and conditioning coach for one year before going t o Massachuset ts. LaMandre earned her bachelor's degree in biology with a chemistry minor from Trenton State in 1986. She added a mast er's degree in exercise science from Massachuset ts in January of1992. LaMandre is a member of t he National Softball Coaches Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association and t he American College of Sports Medicine. Assistant Coach Rachel Lawson Joining t he University of Maryland Terrapin softball program is assistant coach Rachel Lawson. Although Lawson may be new to College Park and the , Terrapin family, her familiarity with collegiate softball will help her t ransition into her new posit ion quickly. A native of Billings, Montana, Lawson joins Maryland head coach Gina LaMandre in her first -ever assist ant coaching posit ion. She comes t o College Park via Amherst, Massachusetts. Lawson was a four-year letterwinner at UMass where she led t he Minutemen to a 1992 3rd place finish at t he College World Series, and two NCAA Regional appearances. A t wo-t ime Atlant ic 10 All-Conference selection, Lawson played first base and was also named totheAtlantic10 AII-Tournament Team in 1992and 1994 . Massachusetts claimed t he Atlant ic 10 regular season championship all four years of Lawson's career, and were crowned tournament champions t hree of the four years. Lawson is a 1994 graduat e of Massachusetts where she earned her bachelor's degree in exercise science. She will earn her mast er's degree in sport management from her alma mater this February. 3 MEET THE TERRAPINS 1995 Terp inaugural team in doubles and RBis with 11 and 21, respectively ... hit .287 which was the second-best average among returnees ...
