The secondcampusistheCollegeof GraduateandProfessional Studies. Openedin 1999, thisnonresidentialandprimarily graduatecollegeisdesignedtosupportlifelonglearning,professionaladvancement,and regionaleconomicdevelopmentbyprovidingprogramstailoredtotheneedsofadult learners,professionals, andmembersofthebusinesscommunity. History and Development of the University Theinstitutionwasfoundedin 1908 asthe StateNormalandIndustrial Schoolfor WomeninFredericksburg. Thenamewaschangedin 1924tothe StateTeachersCollege atFredericksburg,andagainin 1938 toMaryWashingtonCollege,havingtransformed overtheyearstoVirginia'spublicliberalartscollegeforwomen. Thenin 1944,Mary Washington Collegebecame affiliatedwiththeUniversityofVirginiaasitswomen's undergraduateartsandsciencesdivision. In 1970theentireUniversityofVirginia becamecoeducationalandin 1972,byactionoftheGeneralAssemblyofVirginia, theMaryWashington Collegebecameanindependent, state-supportedinstitutionfor women andmen,withitsowngoverningboard. In 1999, respondingtoaccelerating M. On July 1, 2004, theMaryWashingtonCollegebecametheUniversityofMaryWashington withtwocolleges,the CollegeofArtsandSciencesinFredericksburg, andtheCollege of GraduateandProfessional Studiesin Stafford. Honor System AnotherelementbasictotheUniversity'smissionisadherencetotheHonorSystem, whichconstitutesone ofthe distinctivefeaturesofstudentlifeattheUniversityofMary Washington. Thissystem, basedupontheintegrityofeachstudent,providesthata studentshallacthonorablyinallfacetsofcampuslife. TheHonorPledge, requiredon quizzes, examinations,andothercoursework, meansthattheworkthatthestudent submitsisthe student'sown, completedaccordingto requirementsforthecourse as determinedbytheinstructor. Lying, cheating, andstealingare specificinfringementsof theHonorCode. Inthe caseofanallegedviolation, an electedHonorCouncilconducts atrial,withtheverdictdeterminedbyarandomlyselectedjuryofstudents. Inthecase ofaconviction,thestudentmayreceivepunishmentasstatedintheHonorConstitution. Prospectivestudentsshouldcontacttheadmissions officetoattendinformationsessions,scheduleindividualinterviews,orrequest applicationmaterials. Computer Labs The College ofGraduate andProfessionalStudieshasthreecomputerlabsthatare availableforstudentuseduringregularCollegehours. Thelabsaremanagedbythe University'sDepartmentofInformationTechnologysupportstaff. Alllabcomputers provideaccesstotheInternet, scanning, anddocumentprinting($0.10perpage), aswell asinstructionalprogramsandthelatestbusinesssoftware. Internship (Professional Internship Program) The CollegeofGraduateandProfessionalStudies(CGPS) offersstudentsprofessional internships, allowingqualifiedindividualstheopportunitytocompleteprofessional projectswheretheymayapplyandexpandtheirknowledgeunderexpertguidance. FacultyinthevariousCGPSprogramsadvisestudentsontheirinternshipprojects. The internsare supervisedbytheirinternship supervisor,theemployer. Internshipcreditawardsrangefromthreetosixcredits. Nomorethansix internship creditsmaycounttowardtheminimumnumberofcreditsrequiredina majororconcentration. Undergraduatedegree-seekingstudentswhohavetransferred/ accumulatedatleast45 semestercreditstowardthedegreewithatleast 12 semester creditscompletedatCGPSwithanoverall 2.5grade-pointaverage(GPA) areeligibleto participatein theProfessionalInternshipProgram(PIP). Graduatestudentsmusthave completedaminimumof6semestercreditsofcourseworkatCGPS andhaveearneda 3.0GPAorhigherasadegree studenttobeeligibleforaninternshipproject.
