UCASprocess AllfulltimeundergraduateapplicationsmustbemadethroughtheonlineUniversities andCollegesAdmissionsService(www.ucas.com)bymid-Januarytoguarantee consideration. TheSchoolofChemistrywillsometimesacceptapplicationsaftertheinitialUCAS closingdateandsometimesparticipatesintheUCASExtrascheme. 2. AccesstoLeedsandRealisingOpportunitiesscheme TheSchoolofChemistryiscommittedtoidentifyingallapplicantswhohavethe potentialtosucceedattheUniversityofLeeds.Applicantswhohaveexperienced disadvantagewillbeflaggedtoadmissionstutorsthroughtheAccesstoLeedsand RealisingOpportunitiesSchemes,usingacombinationofeducationalcontext,social factorsandpersonalcircumstances. AdmissionstutorscanthenassesstheAccessto LeedsandRealisingOpportunitiesapplicant’spotentialusingthecontextualevidence, andstudentsthatreceiveanofferwillreceiveanalternativeofferalongsidetheir standardoffer.ThealternativeofferwillbetheequivalentoftwoALevelgrades(across twoofthreeAlevels,iftaken)belowtheirstandardoffer,conditionaluponsuccessfully completingtheAccesstoLeedsorRealisingOpportunitiesmodule.AccesstoLeeds studentswillalsohavetomaketheUniversityofLeedstheirfirmchoice. Accessto LeedsandRealisingOpportunitiesstudentswillbeeligibleforanAccesstoLeedsofferif theymeettheUniversity’sGCSEmatriculationstandardand,forcourseswhichrequire particularsubjectskills,havegainedatleast agradeC(orequivalent)intherequested 1 subjectarea. We welcomeapplicationsfromapplicantswhoareintendingtoundertakeaGapYear. WethereforestronglyencourageallapplicantstodeclaretheircashedinAS results. Wherecandidateschoosenot todisclosetheirdisabilitythismaymakeitmoredifficult,orinsomecasesimpossible, fortheUniversitytomakeadjustments. Allformalrequestsformitigatingcircumstancestobetakeninto accountintheadmissionsprocessshouldbesupportedbyafulldeclarationaboutthe natureofthecircumstances.Wherethesecircumstancesareaffectingorhaveaffected currentstudiesthecorrectcourseofactionwouldbetonotifytherelevantexamboard ofthecircumstances.Youarewelcometonotify(viaaverifiedstatement)therelevant admissionsofficeofthecircumstances.Itwillhoweverbeassumedthattheexamboard willtakethecircumstancesintoconsiderationandthesemaynotbeconsideredwhen makinganofferorintheAugustresultsperiod. Admissionsintake 14.Admissionsintake TheintakeforChemistrythroughUCASistypically150homestudents,includingmature studentsandthosefromtheEuropeanUnion. Internationalfee-payingstudentsare consideredinadditiontothisfigure. 15.Competitionforplaces ProgrammeswithintheSchoolofChemistryaregenerallyverypopularandwereceive inexcessof900applicationsforthe150ofplacesavailable. Mostofourapplicants haveanexcellentacademicrecord,typicallymatchingorexceedingthetypicalofferfor thespecificcourse. 2 Incontrastwithdisabilityissues,healthissuesaregenerallyshorter-term(lastinglessthan12 months)andhavealesssignificantimpactonaperson’sabilitytocarryoutnormalday-to-day activities. 4 Selectionprocess 16.Selectionprocess AllapplicationsmustbemadeonlinethroughtheUniversitiesandCollegesAdmissions Service(www.ucas.com). Academicgradesnormallyformonlyonepartofthefinal decisionandthefollowingsectionsgiveexamplesofhowapplicantsmaydemonstrate thattheyhavetheskills,knowledgeandattributesthatwebelievewillenablethemto becomeasuccessfulstudentintheSchoolofChemistry. Theselectioncriteriamusttreatallstudentsfairlyandnotdiscriminateunlawfullyon groundsofmaritalstatus,gender,race(includingcolour,nationality,nationaloriginor ethnicorigin)disability,sexualorientation,age,religionorbelief,politicalorother opinion,socialorigin,associationwithanationalminority,property,birthorother status. 17.Academicentrancerequirements TheSchoolofChemistrywelcomesapplicationsfromapplicantsstudyingarangeof Level3qualificationswherestudentshavethepotentialtosucceedontheirchosen degreecourse. Itisessentialthatapplicantstakethisopportunitytodemonstratetheir enthusiasmandaptitudefortheacademicsubject. Wealsowishtohearaboutyour otherinterestssothatwecanprovideyouwithinformationabouthowyoucanpursue theseinterestsattheUniversityofLeeds. 19.Interviews ForapplicantsbasedintheUKwhoapplyaspartofthestandardUCAScycle,itisour policynottomakeanofferwithoutinterview. Weinterviewapproximately500 applicantsduringthemonthsofOctober-March.Applicantsareinterviewedbya memberofacademicstaffandinterviewslastforapproximatelytwentyminutes. The interviewallowsustoassesshowyouthinkaboutthesubject,thenon-academic criteriawerequire(thepersonalqualitiesthathavebeendemonstratedbysuccessful studentsonthisprogramme)andyourcommunicationskills. Theinterviewisalsoan excellentopportunityforyoutodiscussthecourseindetailwithamemberofstaff. On thedayofinterview,applicantswillalsohavetheopportunitytolookaroundtheSchool ofChemistryandthecampus,viewademonstrationandmeetsomeofourstudents. 5 YouwillreceiveawritteninvitationfromtheSchooltosignuponlineforadateto attendaninterviewday. Unsuccessfulapplicants 21.Reasonsforunsuccessfulapplications Duetothevolumeofapplicationsreceivedwemayhavetorejectstudentswhoalready holdorarepredictedlowerthanthetypicalacademicentryrequirement,andalso manystudentswhomeetthenon-academicrequirements. TheUCASformsof applicantswhoareunsuccessfulingainingaplaceontheirchosenprogrammemaybe passedtotheadmissionstutorsforothercourseswhichtheapplicantmaybe interestedin. 22.Feedback Unsuccessfulapplicantsmaywishtorequestfeedbackonthereasonfortheoutcomeof theirapplication.
