Nerve-wracking. And ultimately fun. The 2008-2009 school year saw a bit of everything, beginning with a new crop of fresh faces arriving for the LSA Pre- Orientation Party and ending in Belvedere, with what will surely be remembered as an End-of- Exams party for the ages. From a highly successful law show benefitting the Alberta Council for Womens Shelters to the Golden Barristers triumph over the alumni team, law school has been quite the experience. For some of us, this is the end of the road, as we prepare for our articling or other employment positions, others are getting ready for the upcoming school year. Over our years in Edmonton, a sense of family has developed throughout the school. Forget the (sometimes accurate) comparison of law school to high school; friendships fostered here are sure to stand the test of time. Many of us chose to attend the University of Alberta because of its unparallel sense of community and collegiality, while offering us a legal education on par with the best schools in the country. Instead of hiding books in the library or ripping out important pages, your law school peers are always able and willing to help you with that pesky LRW assignment or that never-ending search for a PR paper topic. The same goes with the exceptional members of our Faculty and Staff. From the Dean down to the receptionists, the 4th floor is not a place to fear. Your professors have been in your shoes before, and make themselves available to help you. There is truly no such thing as a stupid question when you are in a rut and do not understand a concept or an assignment, so take my advice and ASK for help. | know my professors have always understood my busy schedule and they were more than happy to clarify details at a later date. Whether you intend on using your degree to practice law, work for government, start your own business or follow whichever path your heart desires, the Faculty of Law will have prepared you for whatever comes your way. The skills and knowledge you have perfected will guide you through your professional life, as well as your personal life. So to graduating students, good luck with the start of your professional careers. To continuing students, remember that balance between your studies and your extra-curricular activities is crucial to personal and academic success. And most importantly, do not be afraid to take a 1L under your wing in September, there is nothing quite like sharing concerns and accomplishments with an upper year. The best way to make your mark at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law is by how you treat your fellow students. | look forward to seeing all of you at Alumni Weekend or Law Show!
