This report is an adjunct to the building inventory and provides an inventory of additional heritage listed and potential heritage assets which are not classified as buildings or not included in the extent of heritage listed fabric of buildings. The format of this report follows that of the building inventory 1.2 Significant Trees The University has arboriculture reports on the trees in the North Terrace, Waite, Roseworthy and Thebarton campuses. These reports identify species, map their location and provide information on size, health and structural condition with recommendations for arboriculture treatment. These reports are held by the Support Services section of Property Services. It should be noted that the trees within the Waite Arboretum are not included in the Waite campus arboriculture report. These are managed separately as a collection through the Director of the Waite Arboretum. The Significant Trees Act covers metropolitan trees but the University, as part of the Institutional Precinct of the City of Adelaide, has not been surveyed by the Adelaide City Council. Trees on campuses outside the metropolitan area are not covered by the Act. An individual tree can be listed as a State Heritage place under the Heritage (Directions) Act 2005 or as local heritage place if it has ‘special historical or social significance or importance within the local area’, under criteria in Section 23(4) of the Development Act 1993. Apart from the whole of the Waite Arboretum, which is a State Heritage place, no specific trees on University campuses have been identified as such to date. A review of the heritage value of individual trees across all campuses may be warranted in the future. 1.3 University Art Collection – Outdoor Sculpture The University of Adelaide has a number of outdoor sculptures, not all of which have historic or heritage value, but which are works of art in their own right. These are managed by the Art and Heritage Collections section of Corporate Information, Finance and Infrastructure. Advice and information on these art works, listed in the Appendix to this report, should be sought from that section. • McDougall & Vines, Conservation and Heritage Consultants, 27 Sydenham Road, Norwood, SA, 5067 • Page 2 2.0 NORTH TERRACE CAMPUS 2.1 Description of North Terrace Campus North Terrace Campus as the original campus of the University, contains the most significant heritage buildings within the University's ownership. These heritage buildings have been previously examined in the University of Adelaide Heritage Listed Structures Inventory prepared by McDougall and Vines in September 2004. Assessment of the campus indicates that there are also a number of additional State Heritage listed assets that are not classified as buildings. These include: • Memorial to Sir Thomas Elder • Memorial to Sir Walter Watson Hughes • Mitchell Gates and Victoria Drive Fence (also included in the Structures Inventory Report) In addition, there are two sets of stairs which link upper and lower levels within the North Terrace Campus. These are: • Exhibition Stairs • Library Stairs The Exhibition Stairs are recommended for inclusion on the State Heritage Register. Sections of the original stone and cast iron fence to North Terrace also remain and should be conserved. • McDougall & Vines, Conservation and Heritage Consultants, 27 Sydenham Road, Norwood, SA, 5067 • Page 3 Location of significant monuments and structures on the North Terrace Campus • McDougall & Vines, Conservation and Heritage Consultants, 27 Sydenham Road, Norwood, SA, 5067 • Page 4 2.2 Memorial to Sir Thomas Elder 2.2.1 Asset Information Name: Memorial to Sir Thomas Elder Location: In front of the Elder Conservatorium off Goodman Crescent, North Terrace Campus Date of Construction: Unveiled in 1903. The University of Adelaide was the largest single recipient of his contributions, and the continued existence of the University in its founding years was ensured by Elder’s financial assistance. This association with the University is reinforced by the location of the memorial in the ‘front lawn’ of the University.
