JOYCE´S ULYSSES

The purpose and outcome of this academic research is to provide the reader with
an innovative reading of Joyce’s novel. This reading consists mainly of a new outlook
on James Joyce’s work, most especially on those psychoanalytic and cultural aspects,
which determine gender subjectivities in male and female characters.
First, this thesis analyses internal and external elements, which bring about the
identity crisis of the heroes. Second, it identifies power and gender relationships as the
main basis for such psychological situation, while allowing for Joyce’s methodology to
sort it out. Third, this study explores the author’s thorough analysis of medical culture
and social situation concerning syphilis in 1904 European and Irish society, as well as
the deep psychoanalytical techniques used by the author to examine society and
individuals. Fourth, it shows his deep analytical insight for cultural studies such as
Jewish and Christian philosophies including their particular gender constructions, and
how he managed to reveal cultural ambivalences on the basis of his analysis. And last,
this thesis proves Joyce’s deconstruction of western masculinity thanks to his analytical
studies, while constructing a new masculine subjectivity based on Jewish masculinity
and a new interpretation of the image of Christ. Needless to say, that his “new womanly
man” implies a recycling process of the whole psychological and cultural western
system, plus a special female subjectivity, capable of meeting the needs of the new man.
These premises are largely debated and maintained in this thesis.
The conclusions are attained by way of the comparative analysis of Joyce’s work
and biography, with literary, psychoanalytical, medical and cultural theories. Therefore,
this thesis involves different scientific disciplines, including linguistic analysis, while
on the other hand, it assembles, relates and interprets the various approaches already
existing on James Joyce’s novel.

El objeto y resultado de esta investigación académica es una nueva
interpretación de la novela de Joyce que permite una visión de conjunto de la obra y
muy especialmente de aquellos aspectos psicoanalíticos y culturales que determinan la
subjetividad de los personajes masculinos y femeninos.
En esta tesis quedan de manifiesto los condicionantes externos e internos que
contribuyen la formación de una crisis de identidad genérica en los héroes, así como la
metodología que utiliza el autor para resolver dicha crisis. Igualmente, esta
investigación muestra el exhaustivo análisis que realiza Joyce de la situación
sociosanitaria y de la cultura médica de su tiempo, así como de las filosofías del
cristianismo y del judaísmo. Todo lo cual le permite desvelar las ambivalencias
culturales que existían en la sociedad, no sólo de Dublín, sino en la sociedad europea y
occidental de 1904, época en la que transcurre la novela. La tesis prueba cómo a partir
de estas paradojas culturales Joyce lleva a cabo la desconstrucción de la masculinidad
cristiano occidental y reconstruye un nuevo concepto de subjetividad masculina basado
en sus interpretaciones psicoanalíticas de la masculinidad judía y de la figura de Cristo.
Ante esta reconstrucción del concepto varón, Joyce ofrece una subjetividad femenina y
un sistema filosófico y psicológico que necesariamente han de adaptarse a las
necesidades psicológicas y emocionales del nuevo hombre. Premisas todas que son
ampliamente analizadas y quedan fehacientemente demostradas en el transcurso de la
investigación.
Las conclusiones de esta tesis se alcanzan a partir del análisis comparativo de la
obra y algunos aspectos de la biografía del autor con critica literaria, teoría y estudios
psicoanalíticos, culturales y médicos. Se trata por tanto, de una tesis de carácter
multidisciplinar que incluye, igualmente, análisis lingüísticos y que aglutina, interpreta
e interrelaciona análisis ya existentes, pero de carácter parcial.
