Wilkinson of Windermere for supplying many of the rarer contemporary books and as always to Mike Chappell for interpreting ; so superbly the mass of sketches and often difficult contemporary material withwhich I supplied him, and toBarry Gregory ofBlandford Press for his constant help and valuable suggestions. PJ.H. AUTHOR'S NOTES There is difficulty in establishing the 'correct' spelling of proper names, contemporary accounts and histories as well as modern works frequently giving different versions of regimental, personal and place-names. Thus can be found Semenovskaya, Semenouskoye, Semenovskoye, Semyonovka and Semenovka, all referring to a collection ofwooden huts and the stream on which they stood; similarly Krasnoe, Krasny, Krasnyi and Krasnoe; Elizavetgrad, Elisabethgrad and Jelisawetgrad; Maloyaroslavets, Malo-Yaroslavets and Malo- Jaroslavitz Kovnoand Kaunas, etc. and the battleknown asBorodino ; ; to the Russians was called 'The Moskwa' (Moskowa or Moskva) by the French. All dates are given according to the Gregorian Calendar used in Western Europe, not according to theJulian Calendar used in Russia until the Revolution; in 1812 the Julian was twelve days behind the Gregorian. Reference should be made to the maps when consulting the brief history of the campaign which follows. Many works are cited in the bibliography as sources for further reading, some of the most accessible being the other titles in the Blandford Press Colour Series. To make initial further reading as easy as possible, the text to certain plates contains precise references to illustrations in other volumes ofthe Blandford series.
