Worship is one of the ways that God rules His kingdom here on earth. Prophetic worship is one of the ways we express God’s will and desire for a given service or meeting. This is allows God to be enthroned in the midst of worship according to Ps. 22:3. 1 Dean Mitchum Foundation God’s Desire and Involvement Zephaniah 3:17 shows to us the heart of our Father God in how he liberates, saves, comforts, and rejoices over us with singing. Jesus has liberated us, and God shows His love and satisfaction with us through His singing. We allow God to sing over us in our services by lending our voices to His thoughts and will. God is the initiator of our prophetic song and the well of joy we draw from. Being connected to God gives us the faith we need and causes our joy to overflow through prophetic singing and playing. Psalms 87:7 instructs us to look to God’s kingdom as the spring of joy. God himself will be our strength and song. He is the power and inspiration in releasing a spontaneous and victorious prophetic song. (Exod.15:2) 2 Prophetic Worship 101 Jesus’ Desire and Involvement There are two important scriptures that we look to regarding Jesus’ direct involvement in worship. They are Heb. 2:12 and Rev. 19:10. The first shows us the relationship we have in Jesus and how he sings praise to God in the midst of the assembly. We allow Jesus to use our voice to declare Praise to God. In the second scripture, we find that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. To testify of Jesus is being prophetic. To have the life and power of Jesus in our services occurs through prophetic ministry. All of our declarations and prophetic songs should be in the spirit and revelation of Jesus Christ. Holy Spirit’s Involvement Of all the spiritual gifts we are told to desire, prophecy is the one we are told to especially desire. (1 Cor. 14:1) Why, because it is one 3 Dean Mitchum that expresses the desire, affections and thoughts of God. Prophecy through the gift of the Spirit actually brings many blessings. We are to pray with the spirit and the mind and we are to sing with the spirit and the mind also. Here we have the Holy Spirit directing our songs and bringing clarity and understanding from the spirit. We have covered the foundation of prophetic worship and brought understanding of how God, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit are all involved in this wonderful ministry. Now let us go on to the motivation of this ministry. 4 Prophetic Worship 101 Motivation Love Love should be the number one motivator in prophetic ministry. Love for the Father through our obedience and love for one another to bless and help one another. 1 Corinthians 13:2 says it so plainly, without love we are nothing. Please understand, even if we do minister prophetically and powerfully - if we do it without love, we are nothing. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. (1 Cor.13:2 NKJV) Love will cause us to be bold and yet humble at the same time. Being prophetic is not simply being spontaneous. It is allowing the love of God to move through us to overcome fear in order to speak His word and minister to others. 5 Dean Mitchum Exhortation 1 Corinthians 12:7 instructs us that the manifestation of the spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. The reason we have these gifts are for others. We overcome fear and timidity by our love for one another and through confidence that comes from instruction. We teach and admonish one another through spiritual songs. Colossians 3:16 and Ephesians 5:19 both tell us of why we are to use spiritual songs - teaching, admonishing and speaking to one another. Blessing and encouraging one another as well as rejoicing together. 6 Prophetic Worship 101 Authorization We are authorized to minister prophetically by numerous passages in the Bible. Let’s take a look at several key verses. To Prophesy on Instruments King David established the corporate ministry of prophesying on the instruments in 1 Chron. 25:2. We should receive boldness to play our instruments from this scripture. To allow God to use us in a way that brings life and healing, breakthrough and victory. To Prophesy by Direction of Leadership Sometimes you may not personally have a prophetic song. However, because you are authorized to play prophetically, you can do so at the direction of leadership. When I first came among the prophets, my pastor at the time told me to play a river. I had no idea what that meant or how to play a river, so I started playing spontaneously in faith. When I finished, 7
