The authors, a social worker and a carer, both with a great deal of experience and understanding of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, have put together a fabulous resource that provides an easy-to-read guide for individuals dealing with this important issue. I have been studying the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on brain and behavioral development for over 35 years, and when I began my research in this area, I was sure it would be a short-term project. Research would confirm or not the clinical findings of Dr. Ken Jones and Dr. David Smith in 1973 that alcohol was a teratogen, an agent capable of causing birth defects. If alcohol was established as a teratogen causing birth defects, pregnant women and women considering pregnancy would stop drinking and the problem would be solved. How naïve I was back then. There is little doubt that within ten years after the identification of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) by Jones and Smith, human data, and data collected with animal models clearly established the damaging effects of prenatal alcohol exposure, prompting the US Surgeon General to issue a warning about the hazards of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. But despite another 30 years of research, the warnings, the public debate about alcohol use during pregnancy, the problem remains, and it is indeed a staggering problem, and a preventable one. Having worked in this field for this long, I regularly hear from parents and caregivers about the problems and issues they face in caring for their children (regardless of their age) who have fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). I often hear ‘I can’t get services …no one seems to understand … we received a diagnosis but there is no follow through with service …what will happen to my child when I am no longer able to take care of them.’ This book will certainly help in answering many of these questions. Maria Catterick and Liam Curran have put together a useful guide 9
