And yet, like many of California's most notable institutions, our campus has a relatively short history. Established in 1919 to serve the rapidly expanding population of Southern California, UCLA transformed the University of California into che nation's first mulcicampus system. Within the mere flash of a century, UCLA evolved from a small junior college on Vermont Avenue into what is today a dynamic institution that is enhancing lives in innumerable ways, throughout California and around the world. UCLA: The First Century char es UCLA's extraordinary ascent into a premier research university, whose world-class faculty counts among its ranks Nobel laureates, MacArthur Fellows, Pulitzer Prize winners and members of every major academic society; and an engine of opportunity: One-third of our graduates are the first in their families to earn four-year degrees and hundreds of thousands of alumni are pioneers in public service, business, medicine, science and technology, the arts and nearly every other field. The journey was not without its challenges-among them, the struggle to forge a separate identity for our rather distinctive campus while respecting the values and traditions of the University of California. And there were, of course, a few pleasant surprises: The campus's academic reputation had climbed so dramatically that, by the early J 980s, our own administrators were astonished when one survey placed UCLA near the top of its national rankings of faculty and graduate programs. With our centennial on the horizon, chis volume-the first comprehensive and scholarly history of the university-is a testament to the unheralded builders and celebrated leaders who shaped the Southern Branch into today' U LA, an internationally renowned center for academic excellence, transformational research and meaningful service to our global society. We are delighted to celebrate these milestones, and we look forward to ever greater achievement during our next hundred years. Gene D. Block CH. .\N.Clf.OlR
