Introduction
TheSwedish Museum ofNatural History has recently started the work ofentering
collection data into data bases. In the course of this work, type collections have
gainedspecialattention.
The registerofAsteraceae types has now been brought to a point were data from
allidentifiedtypespecimenshavebeenenteredinto thedatabase. TheDepartment
ofPhanerogamic Botany keeps type material separate from the main collection,
andthedatabaseincludes information ofmaterial kept in this typecollectiononly.
It must be pointed out in this context that many types are still to be found in the
main collections, particularly among the older material. Indeed new types are
continuously identified by members of the staff and by scientists who have had
materialonloan,orby visitorstotheherbarium.
It shouldalso be noted that type material in the Linnaean Herbarium (S-LINN) is
notincludedatthisstage. Thisimportantherbarium issubjecttoaspecialstudy by
B. Nordenstam,andwillbepublishedseparately.
Furthermore,typesofapomictic taxa (Hieracium, Taraxacum) in theScandinavian
Herbarium are not listed here. They are very numerous and need special study.

Typification ofScandinavian Taraxacum taxa is under way and will be published
&
elsewhere (Lundevall 01Igaard, inprep.).
During the course of our work, we have been able to remove a number of
specimens from the type herbarium which clearly did not qualify. Several
specimens with nude names, or with unpublished "schedae" names were also
removed. It is inevitable that more improvements can be made, and therefore we
call upon our readers to submit suggestions ofchanges and improvements to Mia
Ehn Salter (material from South and Central America, except Mexico), or Ame
Anderberg (material from otherpartsoftheworld).
All data from the botanical type collections that have been registered so far have
been releasedon the Internet, where they are available from the Swedish Museum
ofNaturalHistorywebserverhttp://www.nrm.se/fbo/coIl/types.htinl.

community to release a preliminary list ofour type material of the Asteraceae in
