(tribeOpatrjnj). TheformerwascapturedonlshigakijimaIs.,RyukyuIslands,SouthwestJapan,and thelatterwasonIwojimaIs.,VolcanoIslands,atthenorthernpartofMicronesja. In this paper, two new species of tenebrionidbeetles, P/atydema sawada1sp. nov. (tribe Diaperini), and Brach、,idium lHo11maesp nov. (tribeOpatrini), will be describedfromJapan. Plalydemasawadaisp nov (Fig. 1) Yellowish brown, with basal half of pronotum except for lateral and basal margins,postero-1atera1portionsofelytraexcept for lateralandapicalportionsob- viouslydarker;dorsalsurfaceratherstronglyshining,ventralonedullyso. Oblong- ovalandstronglyconvexabove. Male. Headsemicircular,distinctlydepressedinanX-shapeinmiddle,minutely punctate,armedwithapairofsubconica1hornsclosetoeyes,whichareleant forwards; clypeustransverselyoblongandconvexabove,denselypunctate,withapexmoderately arcuate; genae oblique, withouter margin feebly produced; eyes large,somewhat transverselyreniform;diatoneabout0.8timestransversediameterofaneye;mentum subcordate with basebriefly truncate, convex inmiddleand distinctlydepressed in lateralportions; gulatriangular andborderedbyfineimpressions;terminalsegment ofmaxillarypalpusfairlylargethoughgentlythickenedtowardsapex,whichisoblique- lytruncate. Thisnewspeciesmaybeeasilydistinguishedfromotherspeciesdescribed fromneighbouringareasinEastAsiabythemaleheadarmedwithtwosymmetrically formedhornsandthepronota1andelytralcoloration. BrachyidMmiwof'imaesp nov (Figs 2,5,8) Brownishblack,withmouthparts,gula,claws,etc.,moreorlesslighterincolour; eachsurfacegentlyclothed with veryshort paleyellowishhairs, dorsalsurface feebly sericeously shining, ventral one gently shining. Oblong-oval, moderately convex above. Male. Head somewhat transversehexagonal, gently declined to apex, weakly rugose-punctate and asperate; apical margin of clypeus indented at the middle, roundedoneachside;outermarginofgenaobliquelyarcuate;eyesrathersmallwhen seen from above; interocular space wide and about 6 times transversediameter of aneye, witha rounded ridgepartially overlyingeacheye. Mentum subpentagona1 and coarsely asperate, withapex roundly pointed; gula triangular and feebly alu- taceous,withashortimpressioninanterior portiononeachside;terminalsegmentof maxillary palpus rather short and securiform. Antennae reaching the middle of pronotum; ratioof the lengthofeachsegment frombasal to apical as follows: 0.7, 0.22, 0.7,0.3,03, 0.3, 0.35, 035, 0.35, 0.3, 027. . . . Pronotumabouttwiceaswideaslong,widestatbasethoughalmostsubparallel- sided in basal half, then roundly narrowed towards apex; apex gently andwidely emarginate,finelyrimmedineachlateral1/3;basewidelybisinuate,finely impressed alongmargin, the impression interrupted inmedial 1/5; sides graduallydeclined to lateral margins, whicharemoredistinctly rimmed thanapex; front angles obtuse, hindonesalittleacuteandpointedpostero-laterad;disctransverselyandgentlyconvex andmoreorlessmicro-shagreened,closelythoughweakly rugose-punctate, the ru- gositymostly formingshort longitudinal ridges, witha faint impressionat baseon each side. Scutellum semicircular andsmooth, thoughmostly hidden beneath the pronotum or itsfringinghairs. Thisnewspeciesresembles Brachyidiumrectangu/um (GEBIEN), original- lydescribedfromthePhilippines,butcanbedistinguishedfromthelatterbythedorsal surfacemoredistinctly asperateandmoredenselyclothedwith finehairs, thepro- notum withmoreremarkablyangulate front angles; theelytralessclearlypunctate- striate, and thedifferentlyshapedprotibiaeand genitaliain themale.
