Twospeciesofverysmallscarabaeidbeetleswithverystrange facieswerecol- lectedbyMunetoshiMARUYAMA,ayoungentomologistspecializedinmymecophi1ous beetles,byFIT(flightinterceptiontrap)intheMalayPeninsula.Hepassedthemtous for detailedstudy.At the firstglance, it wasnoticedthat they belongto thegenus Haroldiusinabroadsense,thoughverypeculiarinthebodyoutline.Becauseofsuch characteristicsastheroundedclypeus,strangelyshapedlegs,andsoon,theywerecon- sidered tobelong to thesubgenus La1,hodiusBAt_THAsAR, 1963,whichwas known fromonlyasinglespecies. Wehaveexamined thetypespeciesandthepresentmaterial offered tousby MARUYAMA,andhaveconcludedthatthelattercontainstwonewspecies. Inaddition wehavecometo theconclusion thatthesubgenus Larhodiusshouldberaisedto the genericrank. AccordingtoBALTHAsAR(1963),thesubgenusLarhodiusischaracterizedbythe following points: 1) clypeus not notched at the centre but widely, continuously rounded,withtheanteriorpartweaklyreflexed,2)elytra1striaepunctate,intervalsnot 380 KimioMAsUMoToandYukaUTsUNoMIYA punctateandglabrous, 3) protibiaenotbidentatebut quadridentate,andmeso- and metatibiaeeachwithalongapicalspur,whichisalmostaslongasthelengthofre- spectivetarsi,4)1stmeso-andmetatarsomereseachbearingaspuralmostofthesame lengthasthetotallengthofeachsegment,5)mesosternumnearlystraightlydefined frommetasternum. Wehave confirmed the following characterscommon to themembersof this group:apicalmarginofheadcontinuouslyrounded,apicalspursofmeso-andmetatib- iaelong,andmeso-andmetasternaIbordersnearlystraight,intervalsminutelypunc- tateandprotibiawiththreeto fourouterteeth. InHaroldius,thebody ishemispherical, theanteriormarginoftheheadwidely incisedatthemiddle,witheachsideoftheincisionproduced,theprotibiawiththe outermarginbidentate,themeso-andmetatibiaewithoutlongterminalspurs,andthe bordersofmeso-andmetasternastronglycurved. Larhodiuscanbeeasilydistinguishablefrom ila,,oldiusbythecharacteristicsno- ticedabove.WearethereforegoingtoraiseLa1hodiustothegenericrank forreasons ofpossessingsuchpeculiarcharacteristics. Larhodiusmaruyamal'sp nov. (Fig.1) Bodyblackishbrown,withoutermarginsdarkerincolour,hairsonantennalclubs paleyellow,hairsonlegsorange;rectangularlyovalandstronglyconvexdorsad;al- mostglabrous. Head broad, re exed along anterior margin, which is widely, continuously roundedand fringedwithshortsetae;clypeusminutelypunctate,notclearlydefined fromgenaeand frons;genae(ocular lobes) finelypunctate,subrectangular at lateral corners,withpost-lateralmargins(oppositetoantero-1atera1marginsofpronotum) fee- blysinuate; fronsweaklyconvex,moderatelypunctate,thepuncturesminuteinante- riorpart,becominglargerposteria somewhatocellatedinposteriorpart.Eyesrather crescent-shapedindorsalview. Pronotumsomewhattrapezoidal,1.33timesaswideaslong,gentlynarrowedan- teriad;apexwidelyemarginate,veryslightlyproducedinmiddle;sidesrathersteeply declined to lateralmargins, whicharedistinctly bordered throughout, slightly ex- planatelateradinmiddle; frontanglesubrectangularwitharoundedcorner,hindangle obtusethoughthecorner isrounded;basevery widely rounde not rimmed, witha rowofpuncturesalongmargininlateralparts;discstronglyraisedinmajorpostero- centra1 part, wholly covered withmicroscopic punctures, also covered with larger punctures,whicharesmallinbasalandcentralparts,becomelargerinanteriorandlat- eralparts,andbecomeovateandocellatedinlateralparts;antero-interiorpartsofpro- thorax hollowedbeneath. Elytrasomewhatsemicircular indorsalview;basewidely,roundlyemarginatein dorsal view;disc withsevenstriae,whicharesuper?olaf butevenly impressed, the TwoNewLarhodlusfromtheMalayPeninsula 381 puncturesinthestriaenotchingintervals;intervalsalmost flat,minutelypunctate;lat- eralmarginsfeeblyexplanateandfinelyrimmed. Pygidiumgentlyconvex,scatteredwithmicroscopicpunctures,withapicalmar- ginborderedbyarim, which isgently widened inmedialpart. Mesosternum short, ratherclosely,shallowlypunctate,nearlystraightlydefinedfrommetasternumbyafine groove;metasternumbroa smoothbutsparselymicroscopically punctateinmedial part,relativelycloselyandcoarselypunctateinlateralparts;abdomenrathershort,3rd to5thvisiblesegmentseachwithatransverserowofpunctures,eachbearinganad- pressedseta. Legsflattenedandwide;protrochantersharplypointedattheantero-externa1cor- ner;protibiatridentatewiththeextremitybearingaboldspurdirectedantero-exteria interiormargingently lobednearbase; protarsusshort andnarrow;mesotibiagently narrowedapicad, with twoapical spursat theextremity, theupper oneofwhich is longer andbolder than the lower,slightlyshorter than thetotal lengthofmesotar- someres,andalsowithshortandboldspinesinlateralpartsoftheextremity;mesotar- suswith1stto3rdsegmentsbearingsetaeonouterandinnersidesofeachapex,the setaealittlelonger thanthelengthof thenext tarsomere;4thmesotarsomererather small; ventralsurfacesofmeso-andmetatibiaeeachwith aramp creased obliquely posteria thoughuneveninproximalpart;metatibiagentlynarrowedapica with a 1 2 Fjgs. 1_2. Bodylength:5.3-5.4mm. Holotype: e,UluGombak(byFIT),Selangor,Malaysia,27-II~5-III-2003,M. MARUYAMA leg. (NSMT).Paratype: 1ex.,samedataas for theholotype; 2 exs. , 21-V~3-VI-2003,thesamelocalityandcollectoras fortheholotype. Notes. This new species resembles Larhodius calca;・atus (JANssENs, 1934), originallydescribed fromBarway, India,butcanbedistinguished fromthelatter by muchlargersize(2.5mminL.calcalatus)andslightlyelongatebody,withtheprono- tummoredenselypunctate,theelytra1striaemoredenselypunctate,theprotibiaebear- ingthreeouterteeth(four teethinL.calcaratus),andthefirst tothirdsegmentsofthe meso-andmetatarsiwithsetaeinthelateralpartsofeachapex. Larhodiushashimisp nov. (Fig2) This newspeciessomewhat resembles thepreceding,butcanbedistinguished fromthelatterbythefollowingcharacteristics: Bodymuchsmaller(3.0-3.7mm),darkreddishbrown,withheadexcept forbasal part of dorsal side, abdomen, pygidiumand legs lighter in colour; antennal clubs clothedwithshortpalehairs. Headlessstronglyproducedlatera with a low curve transverseridgeinmid- dle,morenoticeably punctate.Pronotumslightly longer,1.35timesaswideas long, morecloselyandclearlypunctate; frontanglesmorestronglyproducedanteriadand angulate,hindanglesobtuselyangulate;lateralmarginsnotexplanatebutsimplyand finelyrimmed;basefinelyrimme witharowofsmallpuncturesalongtherim.Elytra punctate-striate,thepuncturesmoresparselysetandmoreweaklynotchingintervals; intervalsfeeblyconvex,relativelycloselypunctate,thepuncturesslightlylarger. Pygidiummoreclearlypunctate.Meso-andmetasterna1ongitudina11yconvex in middle.Abdomensomewhatalutaceous,morecoarselypunctate,lateralpartsof2rdto 4thvisiblesterniteseachwithatransverserowofpuncturesbearingadpressedscales. TwoNewLa1・1/odiusfromtheMalayPeninsula 383 要 約 益本仁雄・宇都宮由佳:マレー半島産La・,hodius属(Dichotomini)の2新種. - 国立科学博 物館の丸山宗利博士が, マレー半島でFITによって採集した小型で半球形のコガネムシを検討 したところ, コガネムシ科Dichotomini族のHaroldius属La,hodius亜属に属する新種であること がわかった. また, Larhodiusは, ila・,oldiusと比較して顕著な特徴をもっているため, 属に昇 格させるべきであるという結論になった. 新種名は, 採集者, および採集者に協力を情しまな かったマラヤ大学のRosliHAsHIM教授にちなんで, Larhodiusmaruya,naispnov.およびL.1/ashimi spnov.と命名した. KuLzER(1957)recordedthirty-fivetenebrionidspeciesfromthePalauIslands,whichare mostlyseasideinhabitants.Iwasthereforesurprisedtofindsuchsylvico1ousspeciesinTAKA- HAsH1s' materialasAmarygmusandaSt,,ongylium,particularlythelatterisknownforthefirst time fromthePalauIslands.
