CONTENTS EDITOR’S NOTE page vii READING LIST ix ADVISERS AND CONTRIBUTORS xvii TWENTIETH-CENTURY SCIENCE-FICTION WRITERS 1 APPENDIX FOREIGN-LANGUAGE WRITERS 913 TITLE INDEX 943 NOTES ON ADVISERS AND CONTRIBUTORS 1007 EDITOR’S NOTE The selection of writers included in this book is based upon the recommendations of the advisers listed on page xvii. The main part of the book covers English-language writers of science fiction whose work has appeared in the 20th century. A few important precursors of 20th-century science fiction have also been included, with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) representing the earliest work to be discussed as part of the genre. The appendix includes selective representations of foreign-language writers whose books have a large audience in English translation. The entry for each writer in the main part of the book consists of a biography, a bibliography, and a signed critical essay. Living authors were invited to add a comment on their work. The bibliographies list writings according to the categories of science-fiction and other publications. In addition, science-fiction writing is further sub-divided into lists of works published under pseudonyms. Series characters are indicated for novels and short story collections. Original British and United States editions of all books have been listed; other editions, such as those published in Australia or Canada, are listed only if they are the first editions. Uncollected science-fiction short stories published since the entrant’s last collection have been listed only when a writer’s reputation is based largely on short stories; in those cases where a story has been published in a magazine and later in an anthology, we have tended to list the anthology. Entries include notations of available bibliographies, manuscript collections, and book-length critical studies. Other critical materials appear in the Reading List of secondary works on the genre. We would like to thank the entrants and contributors for their patience and cooperation in helping us compile this book. vii
