The first “seeds” of the book were actually sown in October 2017 during an intimate conver- sation between the three authors after a departmental meeting held in the Department of Political Science and International Relations of Marmara University, Istanbul. The fact that we all felt overwhelmed by the administra- tive workload at the time urged us to make an effort to change our agenda and discuss how we could expand our academic collaboration. In this sense, long-standing discussions regarding Turkey’s foreign policy and particularly its “axis shift” constituted a point of departure as well as a source of inspira- tion for us. This is how we decided to pool our efforts as colleagues special- izing in the past and present of Turkish foreign policy and write a book on Turkey’s relations with the United States and Russia from a historical and comparative perspective. Despite our initial enthusiasm, the book project had to be delayed for almost two years because of some personal preoccupations as well as other academic undertakings. Fortunately, we found the chance to revitalize the project in October 2019—once again in the wake of another departmental meeting. With this new momentum, we wrote a detailed proposal as well as a literature review, which formed the basis of our initial correspondence with the publisher. The working title and other details regarding the book were decided in the subsequent months as we continued to write our respective chapters. Yet, shortly after we started writing the book, the COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying national lockdowns have quickly spread around the world including Turkey. It was not easy for us to continue writing at a time when we witnessed such a traumatic period in world history which caused significant vii viii Preface stress, anxiety, and concerns about the future for every person. However, our trust in each other as well as the fact that we did not view this book only as an academic project we “had” to complete, made this process much more toler- able and enjoyable. Therefore, we continued to work together, hold regular conversations, and seek answers to the challenges that we faced in a very cooperative manner. All of these efforts and memories are reflected in this book, which naturally make it a very valuable experience for us. We are so delighted to finally share this book with the readers and par- ticularly with the scholars of Turkish foreign policy. We would also like to dedicate the book to the healthcare workers all around the world who have bravely fought and sacrificed their lives during the pandemic. February 2021 Istanbul Acknowledgments We would like to thank Emre Erşen for his meticulous work in proofreading. We would also like to thank our families who gave us tremendous emotional support while we completed this book project during the pandemic. ix
