BASTERIA, 58: 198, 1994 Turbonillacoomansi, anew namefor Turbonillapusilla (C.B. Adams, 1850) nonT. pusilla (Philippi, 1844) (Gastropoda Opisthobranchia, Pyramidellidae) J.J. van Aartsen Adm.Helfrichlaan 33,6953 GBDieren, the Netherlands Turbonillacoomansi nom.nov. is proposedforChemnitziapusillaC.B.Adams, 1850, non C.pusilla Philippi,1844.Two earliernominanova appeartobe homonyms. Key words: Gastropoda, Opisthobranchia, Pyramidellidae,Turbonilla, taxonomy, synonymy, Atlantic Ocean, West Indies. The well-known Caribbeanpyramidellid Turbonilla pusilla (C.B. Adams, 1850) was originally describedin the genusChemnitzia d'Orbigny, 1840.Unfortunately the name Chemnitziapusilla C.B. Adams, 1850,is aprimary homonym ofC.pusilla Philippi, 1844, oneofthe morecommon European species ofTurbonilla.Becauseofthispreoccupation, the replacement nameT. minorwasproposed by Bush in1899.Thisnameis usede.g. in the recent book by DeJong & Coomans (1988: 126). However, the name T. minor Bush, 1899, is again preoccupied, viz. by T. minor Seguenza, 1876.ThereforeBush'sname cannot be used. A second replacement name was proposed for T. pusilla (C.B. Adams, 1850), viz. T. adamsiCossmann, 1912,which nameis aprimary homonym ofT. adamsiClessin, 1902,andthus cannot beusedeither. Theconclusion canonly be that T.pusilla (C.B. Adams, 1850) is stillinneedofa new name, forwhich Ipropose Turbonillacoomansiafter Dr.H.E. Coomans ofthe Zoologisch Museum, Amsterdam.
