XLV ic O FFICIAL ORGAN OF T H E RO YAL A ERO CLUB IPS J T» T T P t T7IT 71 D P THE SLEEVE VALVE EXPLAINED There is nothing complicated about “ Bristol ” sleeve valves or their operating mechanism. Basically, each valve is a steel cylinder with four ports at the top and an operating band at the base. A ball-joint is attached to this band to accommodate a driving-crank, and all sleeves are operated through a train of gears ; the master being located on the engine crankshaft. Working parts are reduced to a minimum. There are no cams, tappets, rockers, or valve springs ; therefore valve bounce and its attendant loss of power is impossible. Once the engine is assembled, valve timing is positively determined ; and the usual valve inspection and adjustment routine, so necessary with other engines, is entirely eliminated. Once you realise the advantages of the sleeve valve you will understand the LEEVE VALVE AERO ENGINES M ay 4TH, 1944 FLIGHT i Limits of 0*0001 in. The valve box shown above is machinea to limits of 0-0002 in., but our plant is capable of even finer work. Even today, working to limits of one-tenth of a thousandth of an inch is not exactly child’s play, and requires a first-class plant and highly skilled labour. We are fortunate in having both: and when they can be released from the Service requirements upon which they are exclusively engaged, we shall use them on the more inspiring but not less precise products of Peace. A CAPITAL INVESTMENT The needs of war have led lo the design and manu facture of many new engineering devices. Many of these will survive to serve* in the days of peace. Among them will be the Yokes Slave Filter. This Oil Filter is mobile ; it was specially designed to provide the finest filtration of lubricating oils. It can render service, and ensure the dependable running of buses and transport vehicles everywhere, for there is no escaping the dust and * grime of our urban, industrial civilisation which is the prime cause of engine wear. (In London alone 200 tons are de posited out of the atmosphere on every square mile The Yokes Slave Filter— one of the latest of Yokes 3,000 models designed to meet all filtration needs— is 99*9 per cent, efficient and is the result of a quarter of a century’s manufacturing experience. In every sense of the word it is a capital investment— the surest safeguard against engine wear and oil wastage A s in war, so it will be on active service in the days o f peace.
