Dezember 2010 10:19 10 Introduction 1 Introduction 2 3 4 Allergies have been increasing for years. We can assume that today, one 5 out of five people have allergies with varying symptoms such as: 6 ● Hay fever in Spring 7 ● Asthma 8 ● Itching skin conditions, rashes or excema 9 ● Joint disorders, and 10 ● Digestive system disorders. 11 12 In many cases, a doctor may be able to diagnose an allergy, but much 13 more often, neither the patient nor the doctor considers allergies as the 14 cause of these disorders. 15 16 The importance of correctly diagnosing and treating allergies and food 17 intolerances becomes even more obvious when one considers that a link 18 may exist between allergies and alertness, motor activity, sexuality, and 19 food intake. Hyperactivity in children and addiction to certain foods may 20 also be linked to allergies. The same applies to intestinal cramps and 21 cramps of the uterus and other hollow organs. This book provides infor- 22 mation for successfully diagnosing and treating allergies and food intol- 23 erances. 24 25 In recent years, there have been frequent reports of athletes who were 26 able to improve their performance by changing their diets. They 27 achieved these improvements primarily by identifying and omitting 28 foods from their diets that they did not tolerate well. As you read this, 29 you may be thinking that athletes are not like most of us, because they 30 have to achieve peak performance under exceptional conditions of ex- 31 treme stress. 32 33 However, almost everyone can get into stress situations in their daily 34 life that are very similar to those of an athlete competing in an event. 35 We are frequently expected to achieve top performance in our profes- 36 sional and private lives. We even expect such performance from our chil- 8 008_140_Stossier NEU.fm Seite 9 Montag, 20. Dezember 2010 10:19 10 Introduction dren and other young people. It should not be surprising that the capac- 1 ity of our bodies to compensate for such stresses is overtaxed in these 2 situations. 3 4 Allopathic medicine has developed precise biochemical concepts for al- 5 lergies. They clearly define how our metabolism responds, which chem- 6 ical processes take place, which symptoms are to be expected, and also 7 which therapies are available. Many people, however, do not fit these 8 standard concepts, and their symptoms cannot be explained by them. 9 The following chapters will introduce an expanded concept of allergies, 10 and will illustrate how lifestyle factors can contribute to an increase in 11 allergies. 12 13 Allergies are not only a reaction to external substances in genetically 14 predisposed individuals; they also develop as a result of our lifestyle and 15 habits. A major contributor to the development of allergies is the envi- 16 ronment, which has changed as a result of our carelessness, and contains 17 many chemical and physically harmful pollutants and irritants. Other 18 contributing factors include our nutritional situation, imbalances in the 19 types of food we eat, and a general lack of healthy eating habits. 20 21 This book shows practical ways out of this situation. Change begins in 22 our head, in this case by recognizing our own situation. The next step is 23 to translate this recognition into action. Once we understand our situa- 24 tion, we can more easily overcome challenges to our own health. Chang- 25 ing our way of life can result in decisive improvements for those of us 26 suffering from allergies and its many symptoms. Even if your symptoms 27 do not fit the classic definition of allergies as you know it, we encourage 28 you to read this book. You may be surprised at what you discover about 29 your own health. 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 9
