Among those who were already living off the land were the Cheyenne, one of several tribes of Native Americans. Like other tribes, such as the Sioux and the Navajo, line 6 they were put under a lot of pressure to change both where and how they lived. Four hundred years ago the Cheyenne, whose name means ‘little red-talker’, were based in the Eastern Woodlands. Unusually for Native American tribes, they were farmers, planting corn and beans rather than hunters. However, by the middle of the nineteenth century this had changed, and the Cheyenne had developed a horse culture and hunted bison on the Great Plains. Traditionally, the chiefs or elders of the Cheyenne were organised into the ‘Council of Forty-Four.’ They had rules for everyday life, warfare, celebrations and ceremonies. One thing that made the Cheyenne different from other tribes, which were exclusively patriarchal, was that women were far more active in tribal affairs. In twenty-first century America, many Cheyenne live in exactly the same way as do most people in big cities. However, there is another option for those who want to keep their traditional way of life. This is to live on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in southeast Montana, or on the Southern Cheyenne Reservation in central Oklahoma. The combined population of the Cheyenne is presently near to 20,000. 1. When did the Cheyenne migrate to the Great Plains? 4. Which of the following is not true? a. around 1850 a. Choose a, b, c or d.  Somewhere deep in the rainforests of South America lies a mysterious place that time has forgotten – and this line 2 is where our expedition was heading. For two days we travelled up a large river, dark in colour, yet transparent, so that one could see the bottom. On either side of the river was thick jungle; the trees were incredibly tall and thick and they seemed to shoot upwards in magnificent columns forming a green roof far above our heads. Occasionally, if I looked up, I saw a ray of sunshine through the green branches. As we walked noiselessly through the thick soft carpet of vegetation, a silence fell upon us and even Professor Challenger’s loud voice sank into a whisper. We passed amazing plantlife: vivid orchids and clusters of flowers curled around ancient tree trunks – it was like a fairyland. There was no sign of animal life on the ground, but a constant movement above our heads told us that there existed another world inhabited by monkeys, birds and snakes. At dawn and sunset the monkeys screamed and the parakeets screeched, but during the long slow hours of the day, the buzz of insects, like the crashing of waves, filled our ears. On our third day, we heard something that terrified us. A deep rhythmic beating in the air. Our Indian companions froze with terror; it was as if they had been turned into bronze statues. ‘What is it?’ I asked. ss ‘War drums,’ replied Challenger. onon ‘Yes, sir, war drums,’ said our guide Gomez. ‘Wild Indians. They are watching us. They will kill us if they can.’ caticati blibli The drums continued beating throughout the day. Sometimes they beat quickly, sometimes slowly, at one PuPu M M point, one far to the east let out a high, fast beat, which was quickly followed by a deep roll coming from the north.
