Epilogue 21 1 Hope Foundation & Research Centre Finolex Academy of Management & Technology, FAMT, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra BACKDROP Hope Foundation and Research Centre (Hope Foundation) was established in 1979 by Late Shri Pralhad P Chhabria, the Founder Chairman of Finolex Group of Companies. The twin motives of the Hope Foundation is to serve the society by providing medical heath accessibility to the needy section of society and to provide quality higher education and research in rural and urban India. Our Founder Chairman had the profound vision ‐ to transform our society through his entrepreneurial endeavour while being passionate about socio‐economic transformation through education and research. He created an industrial empire with determination and dedication and at the same time created institutions like FAMT, Ratnagiri and I²IT, Pune. Both these institutions exemplify his philosophy of “quality education at affordable cost and uplifting the needy students from all corners of our India.” The Finolex Academy of Management and Technology (FAMT) (www.famt.ac.in) was established at Ratnagiri in the year 1996, an engineering college approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The main aim was to bring technical education to the remote Konkan region of Maharashtra. FAMT has been one of the main reasons for the transformation of Ratnagiri and the nearby region into modern economy by providing livelihoods for many. The institute has flourished over the last 21 years and has been steadily grooming professionals and technocrats to serve this part of the country. FAMT, which is affiliated to Mumbai University, is envisaged to be converted into a Deemed to be University to enable –  Industry & practical oriented education  Enhance employability of students in rural India  To establish industry academia interaction  To mentor more entrepreneurs than job seekers  Research oriented environment by creating ultra‐modern facilities & availability of good academic atmosphere by motivating the faculty & students.  To create adaptability to ever changing and dynamic technological environment.  Overall development of student s to make them good citizens of the nation.  Special impetus on girl student development. A study of the impact that FAMT has had on the Socio-Economic landscape of the Konkan Region in Maharashtra 2 Hope Foundation & Research Centre Finolex Academy of Management & Technology, FAMT, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra Philosophy: One of the fundamental thinking, instilled by the Founder Chairman, is “it is our responsibility that nobody who approaches our institute is deprived of education for need of finances.” This philosophy has become inveterate among the Team FAMT. Scholarship schemes to the tune of Rs.5 lacs per annum have been introduced as financial aid to needy students. Further, all the social welfare schemes of Central and State Govt. are successfully implemented for students’ benefit. Vision: The Academy aspires to nurture leaders who are in tune with global trends, equipped with engineering knowledge and practical skills, and urged to excel in creativity and innovation in order to play their part in the technological advancement of our nation. Mission:  To become foremost seat of specialized technical learning in the Konkan region.  To offer state of art educational infrastructure and facilities at affordable cost.  To inculcate in students, the culture of ‘Play Hard and Play Fair’.  To advance sustainable development in the region through opportunities for entrepreneurship and interaction with industry.  To create a generation of young professionals who appreciate in all its aspects the necessity of balance between technological advances and traditional values. A study of the impact that FAMT has had on the Socio-Economic landscape of the Konkan Region in Maharashtra 3 Hope Foundation & Research Centre Finolex Academy of Management & Technology, FAMT, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra THE JOURNEY In 1991‐92, Finolex Industries Ltd (FIL), formerly known as Finolex Pipes Ltd was established at Ranpar, Ratnagiri. One of the first industries to set up base in this remote area, Chairman was appalled at the lack of infrastructure and facilities in this remote place. While India was surging forward with economic liberalization, rural India seemed to be untouched by any developments. It is then that Chairman Sir decided to create excellent facilities in technical education in this area and thus Finolex Academy of Management & Technology was set up. The academy was launched in 1996 with one branch (Electronics Engineering) with an intake of 60 students and the rest as they say – is history.
