ThisSpringerimprintispublishedbytheregisteredcompanySpringerNatureSwitzerlandAG Theregisteredcompanyaddressis:Gewerbestrasse11,6330Cham,Switzerland Preface Innovative scientific methodologies and challenging projects marking future trends in the protection of cultural heritage have initiated a universal conversation within a holistic approach, merging capabilities and know-how from the scientific fields of architecture, civil engineering, surveying engineering, materials science and engi- neering, informationtechnologyandarchaeology, aswellasheritageprofessionalsand stakeholdersincultural heritage. The advanced digital documentation permitsthedata fusion of interdisciplinary innovative modeling, analytical and non-destructive tech- niques, supporting the emergence of a transdisciplinary field for multispectral sus- tainable preservation and management of cultural heritage. The project of the rehabilitation of the Holy Sepulchre’s Holy Aedicule, as a pilot multispectral, multidimensional, novel approach based on transdisciplinarity, holistic digital reconstruction and cooperation in the protection of monuments, motivated the organization of this conference. As discussed in the homonymous panel with the NTUAInterdisciplinaryTeam(Prof.AntoniaMoropoulou,NTUASchoolofChemical Engineering- Coordinator, Prof. Manolis Korres, Emeritus, Academy of Athens, Prof. Andreas Georgopoulos, NTUA School of Rural and Surveying Engineering, Prof. Constantine Spyrakos and Asst. Prof. Charalambos Mouzakis, NTUA School of Civil Engineering), National Geographic Society (Fredrik Hiebert, Archaeologist), World MonumentsFund(YiannisAvramides,CivilEngineer),EuropeanCommission(Albert Gauthier),aswellastherepresentativesofthethreeChristianCommunities,Guardians oftheHolyTombandAsst.Prof.StefanosAthanasiou,UniversityofBern,Facultyof Theology, theopeningofthescientificcommunitytowardssociety, whichmanagedto reach out to all humanity, was successfully achieved through the cooperation of National Geographic with NTUA, as characteristically demonstrated through its con- tribution inhighlighting and transmittingthe ecumenical values related to theopening of the Holy Tomb. The conference also explored the sustainable preservation and management of monuments, sites, and historic cities as a prerequisite, which must be met in order for them to remain within the listed Monuments of World Heritage recommended by UNESCO, such as the Medieval City of Rhodes, for which the strategic management plan proposed by the NTUA was discussed in detail. In this direction, new funding tools,schemes,andmechanismsaresought,basedonthere-useofheritageassetsatthe service of local communities and in order to enhance their value, aiming to increase social participation and awareness and at the same time generate revenue for a sus- tainable preservation within the framework of circular economy, as stressed by Mrs. Bonnie Burnham, President Emeritus of the World Monument Fund, Mr. George Kremlis, E.C.-D.G. Environment, Responsible for the Circular Economy, Mrs. Le Minaidis, Secr. Gen. OWHC (Org. of World Heritage Cities) – Coordinator, Prof. Ismini Kriari, Rector at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, Prof. Michael Turner, UNESCO Chair in Urban Design, Conservation Studies/Bezalel VI Preface Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, Mr. Teris Chatziioannou, Deputy Mayor of Rhodes, as well as NTUA Professors Antonia Moropoulou, President of the TCG General Assembly, Sophia Avgerinou-Kolonia, ICOMOS CIVVICH, President of the Board of Directors of Eleusis 2021 - European Capital of Culture, Eleni Maistrou, Society for the Environmental and Cultural Heritage (ELLET), Council of Architec- tural Heritage. In the panel “Novel Education Approach for the Preservation of Monuments,” the educationofbothsocietyandmembersofthescientificcommunitywasdiscussed. The Interdisciplinary NTUA Post-Graduate MSc Program “Protection of Monuments,” 20 years after its founding, offered by the NTUA School of Architecture, with the cooperation of the NTUA Schools of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and RuralandSurveyEngineering, representedinthepanelbyProf.IreneEfesiou,NTUA, Post-Graduate MSc Program “Protection of Monuments” Em. The significant contribution of multimedia in the education of not only scientists, but the whole of society was discussed with Marcie Goodale, Product Director of National Geographic Learning and J. J. Kelley, Emmy-nominated film-maker of National Geographic. In order to achieve a multilateral approach for the preservation of cultural heritage, heritage stakeholders, science, and industry must be brought together. This issue was discussed in the relative panel by Amalia Androulidaki, Dir. Gen. of Anastylosis, HellenicMinistryofCultureandSports–Coordinator,YuvalBaruch,IsraeliAntiquity Authorities, Michalis Daktylides, PEDMEDE, European Construction Industry Fed- eration (FIEC), Kyriakos Themistokleus, Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK), member of the Executive Committee, Prof. Panagiotis Touliatos, Frederick University of Cyprus, Stefano Dellatore, Politecnico di Milano, Athina Chatzipetrou, PresidentHellenicArchaeologicalFund,Dr.EvgeniaTzannini,LawLecturerNTUA- T.C.G., Özgür Turan Aksan, Architect, Istanbul, Dr. Ekaterini T. Delegou, NTUA, representing the Hellenic Construction Technology Platform - T.C.G., NTUA, and Elena Korka, ICOMOS, member of the International Board. The innovative panel procedures of the conference formatted the future landscape for the preservation of cultural heritage. The First TMM_CH conference attracted researchers from all over the world, as 237 contributions were submitted for oral presentation from 22 countries. In addition, the participants of the conference, including stakeholders, industry, and academy, especially scholars and young researchers, who came from all over the world, highlighted the fact that it was an Preface VII internationalconference, whichsuccessfullyachievedbringingtogetheravastnumber of brilliant specialists who represent the aforementioned fields to share information about their latest projects and scientific progress. Striving to ensure that the conference presentations and proceedings are of the highest quality possible, we only accepted papers that presented the results of various studies focused on the extraction of new scientific knowledge in the area of transdis- ciplinary multispectral modeling and cooperation for the preservation of cultural her- itage. Hence, only 73 papers were accepted for publishing (i.e., 32% acceptance rate). All the papers were peer reviewed and selected by the international Steering and ScientificCommittees,comprising105and155reviewers,respectively,andfromover 90 institutions. Each submission was reviewed by three reviewers. We would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to all the reviewers for devoting their precious time to thoroughly review the submissions and provide feedback to the authors. Subsequently, we are happy to present this book, Transdisciplinary Multispectral Modeling and Cooperation for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, which is a collectionofthepaperspresentedattheFirstInternationalTMM_CHConferenceheld during October 10–13, 2018, at the Eugenides Foundation of Athens in Greece.
