X The Impact of on History Modem Thought Jewish $6.95 In the early nineteenth century, as Jews through- out Western Europe acquired political and legal status, European thought currents began to erode the dependence of Jewish intellectuals on their religious and historical tradition. This ero- sion was fostered by a movement of Jewish in- tellectuals in Germany who put religious tradi- tion in the role the historian had reserved for the records of his civilization; that is, as keys to understanding what has been and might be, but not necessarily as guides to what should be. In this volume, the third book in the Contempo- rary Jewish Civilization Series, Nathan Roten- streich examines the trends of thought (the Science of Judaism) and six prominent nine- teenth-century scholars—Leopold Zunz, Hein- rich Graetz, Nachman Krochmal, Simon Dub- now, Ahad Ha-am, and Chaim Nachman Bialik —who attempted to replace the religious bonds by principles of different character. Against the general direction in which these scholars move, however, Dr. Rotenstreich posits again the question of the role of Jewish religious tradition as such. He discusses the intimate and fundamental closeness of this tradition to the revealed word of God. He reasons that a reju- venation of tradition has to come near to no- tions implied in the Judaic view of the world, i.e., to man as a being judged by his deeds.
