Pakistan, however, is trailing behind in terms of trade balance, with our imports swelling more and more. In order to address this imbalance all our exportable surpluses must be exploited. The Pakistani Embassy in the Netherlands is facilitating exports from Pakistan by using the Netherlands as a gateway to Europe. The Embassy provides a number of services to Dutch importers in order to ensure that they have accurate information and can develop successful trade linkages with Pakistan. It is our objective to provide trade counseling and promote Pakistani products and services in the Netherlands, in addition to counseling, advocating and protecting Pakistan's commercial interests here. We at the Embassy in The Hague, provide counseling to Pakistani exporters on market opportunities, regulations and methods of doing business in the Netherlands and are also consistently exploring targeted markets according to the needs of Pakistani companies. Furthermore, the Pakistani Embassy has close collaborations with the Pakistan Ministry of Commerce, the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company (PHDEC) for organizing mango and kinnow annual exhibitions in the Netherlands. We have been stressing to Pakistani exporters that under the coming regime of trade H.E. Moazzam Ahmad Khan liberalization only those producers who will be specialized in the production of Ambassador competitive products can survive. We understand that Pakistan, besides the production of some major crops, also have an advantage in the production of horticultural crops, Embassy of Pakistan to the Netherlands especially fruits. But unfortunately, at the present time, Pakistan is not exploiting full potential of fruit culture and this is because of traditional farming methods which are out- dated and without any net value addition. In this context, it is highly appreciable that the EU funded Trade Related Technical Assistance (TRTA II) Programme implemented by UNIDO is working with the mango and kinnow farmers of Pakistan right at their farm fields so that they are able to adopt the methods and techniques which are compatible with international standards. The exposure trips for the exporters, farmers and concerned government functionaries of Pakistan, like the recently organized study tour by the TRTA II Programme to European markets, is a way forward towards providing on site visualization of fruit trade in different market places of EU countries. This provided opportunities to the Pakistani exporters and farmers, not only to learn from the experience of mango importing countries in Europe, but also exposed the standards maintained by the other countries exporting mango to the EU markets. We are pleased to state that our Embassy has provided assistance in identifying agents and distributors in the Netherlands and specifically organized meetings and visits to retail outlets, wholesale and supermarkets and subsequent meetings with their respective representatives in The Hague. One of such event was hosting an official dinner in order to provide the Pakistani exporters and farmers with a great opportunity to intermingle with a select group of potential mango/ kinnow buyers from the key market sector in the Netherlands. The overall intent was that the exporters learn the market dynamics of European markets. Finally, I have no hesitation to reiterate the importance of the three 'Ps' i.e. Preservation, Packaging and Presentation for marketing the products in the EU or elsewhere in the world. I have therefore urged the delegation to meet the international standards of packaging. Further, I assure the Embassy's full assistance to the TRTA II programme, Pakistani businessmen and EU importers in marketing the mangoes and other fruits and vegetables to EU countries in general and the Netherlands in particular.
