3 0 0 2 — D L E I F E K A W F O N W O T WOODVILLE SCHOOL The new $14 million Woodville School on Farm Street, called a technological marvel with its computers and projectors, opened to receive students for the first time on Tuesday, April 29, 2003. Only Franklin School students transferred in for the closing eight weeks of the school year. In September the student body will dou¬ ble under redistricting with some students from Greenwood and the closed Doyle School also in attendance. The new school replaces the one razed beginning July 3, 2001, after serving the town for nearly 80 years. The prior Woodville opened Wednesday, September 8, 1920, which also happened to he state primary day, the first day Wakefield women were able to vote for all candidates rather than be limited to voting only for School Committee and Library Trustees. After the new Woodville was opened in 1920, the first Woodville was razed. The new 2003 Woodville has 66,000 square feet to house 27 K-5 classrooms, a gymnasium, cafeteria, library and music hall. The architectural firm was HMFH Architects, Inc. of Cambridge and the general con¬ tractor G. Greene Construction of Boston. The town owned property on the east side of Farm Street south of the Mill River, which feeds the Saugus River, has been used as a school site for at least 165 years. At some time prior to 1838 the Little World School, a wooden building, was constructed near the present school. The only reason we know the original school existed is that the 1838 School Committee report mentions it. That Little World School was even older than the four schools erected in 1847, including the one remaining structure, the 156 year old West Ward School. By request of area residents, the name Little World was changed to Woodville during the 1856-57 school year. This year's magnificent new school thus is the third to bear the name Woodville in the past 146 years. Just as the 2003 Woodville has all the latest aids for teaching elementary students, the 1920 School Department report stressed that the then new Woodville School was the first in town with electric clocks and that the building was equipped as a civic center with arrangements for a stereopticon and a moving picture machine. The previous 1920 Woodville School was mothballed from 1946 through 1950 due to declining enrollment after only two of its six classrooms were used. In 1950 the school reopened as an elementary school when it was needed for increasing enrollments in the Baby Boom that followed WWII. Nearly 30 years later it was again ready to be mothballed as enrollment skidded, but this time the alternative high school, started in 1979, was moved from WHS to take over the Woodville. The private Dearborn Academy was housed there from 1986 to 1996 and the SEEM Collaborative housed its Campus Academy for the following three years until the building closed in the fall of 1999.
