Instead,theintentofthisdashboardistosparkdiscussionandgiveasnapshot ofwheretheoccupationalclusterislikelytobewithinthenext10-yearperiod. Shortagesweredeterminedbylookingattheunemployment,vacancy,andhiring difficultyrates,aswellasthedemand-supplyratioforanumberofoccupational clusterswithinsectors.Occupationsaresortedbyindustrysectorasoutlinedin AppendixA. Thisbookletusesatrafficlightsystemtohelpdefineshortages,basedonthe following: Unemployment: Iftheunemploymentrateofanoccupationisless thanthreepercent,thereisashortage. Vacantjobs:Ifthevacancyrateofanoccupationismorethantwopercent, thereisashortage. Hiringdifficulty:Ifthehiringdifficultyrateofanoccupationismorethan 25percent,thereisashortage. Demandandsupplyofworkers:Ademand-supplyratioofgreaterthan oneindicatesasupplyshortagewhilearatiooflessthanoneindicatesa supplysurplus. Occupationalclustersarecodedred,yelloworgreenbasedonthefollowing:2 Red-AllindicatorsshowshortageORthevacancyrateisoverfive percentandthereportedhiringdifficultyover40percent. Labour Market and Economic Indicators Dashboard Tourism Thetourismsectorfocusesonthepromotion,expansionanddevelopmentof Alberta’stourisminfrastructureandservices.Thissectorincludesprivateand publictourismmarketingandservicesaswellastourismexperiencessuchas: outdooradventure,wildlifeviewing,shopping,culturaleventsandurban nightlife.3 IndustryChallengesand Issues Demographicchangesareexpectedtohaveasignificantimpactonthetourism sectorwiththetravelbehaviourofretiringbabyboomersprovidingincreased pressureontheindustry.Theindustryisexpectedtoremainvulnerableto shocksfromoutsidethesector,betheyhighfuelprices,naturaldisasters,or geo-politicalevents. Otherfactorsthatcontributetothelabourchallengesfacedbythetourism industryinclude: •Theseasonalnatureofthesectorasabarriertocontinuityof staffing. •Highturnoverandneedforcontinualtraining. •Retentionissuesof staffwhoaretypicallyyoungandnotnecessarily committedtoacareerintheindustry. •Considerablelackofmanagementskills.
