The rod of Asclepius consists of oa single serpent entwined around a staff. This oicon symbolizes both rebirth, by o b b way of a snake shedding its skin, and albso authority, by way of the staff. b b e e In ancient Greek mythology, Ascelepius was the son of Apollo and a skilled peractitioner of medicine who learned e m m m m m the medical arts from the centaur Chiron. Asclepius’ healing abilities were so great that he was said to be able to bring back people from the dead. These powers displeased the gods, who punished Asclepius by placing him in the sky as the constellation Orphiuchus. m The rod of Asclepiusm is at times confused with the caduceus, or wmand, of Hermes, a staff entwined with two sermpents m and often depicted with wings. The caduceus is often used as a symbol of medicine or medical professionals, but there is o o o o o little historical basis for this symbolism. c c c c c . As you may. have guessed, our logo uses the rod of Asclep.ius that is modified to also resemble the CN To.wer – our way . e e e e e of recognizing the university and community in which we have been privileged to learn the art and science of medicine. e e e e e r r r r r f Thfomas O’Brien, MD f f f s s s s s k kClass of 2009, M.D. Program, University of Tkoronto k k o o o o o o o o o o b b b b b e e3 e e Toronto Notes 2018e m m m m m m m m m o o o o c c c c . . . . e e e e Preface – From the Editors e e e e r r r r f f f f s s s s k k k k o o o o oDear Readers, o Australian Medicaol School Association, among o b b others.
