Nature you can feel. natural personal care WELCOME! Weight loss is a tricky subject, especially so on social media. I was chatting to the editor of an online health magazine a few weeks back, asking which content got the most reads on their website, and she answered without hesitation: weight loss. We talked about how it’s almost become socially taboo to talk about wanting to lose weight, as it can spark a backlash among proponents of the “body positive” movement (our July cover star, Kelly Brook, said the same thing in her interview, about being criticised for using slimming products and wanting to lose weight). Said editor and I concurred that while it’s of course helpful and supportive to love and appreciate your body, whatever size it is and wherever you’re at on your health journey, it’s undeniable that carrying too much weight can lead to various chronic health conditions. I know many of you also want help and advice in this area, as when we do reader surveys, weight loss is always the number one concern. This is why we dedicate our special section this month to weight loss, or, rather, fi nding your healthy and happy weight, as there’s no one-size-fi ts-all. We look at why eating fat should not be feared (p52), why toxins could be preventing you losing weight (p58) and talk to a woman who, by learning to value herself as well as making diet changes, managed to shed more than 10 stones. Finally, it was my pleasure to talk to Lorraine Kelly for our cover interview. The star shared how she put on weight during lockdown and how she’s managed to get back to size 10. She also told me about her love of wild swimming and how her fi rst foray into this popular pastime was in Antarctica! I’ve stepped up my swimming this year, and was enjoying an invigorating dip this morning (see instagram.com/thehealtheditor). If you live near the coast, a lake or a lido, I urge you to swim as, to quote Get 3 Lorraine, “You feel better within yourself, you really do”. issues (cid:10)(cid:32)(cid:51)(cid:56)(cid:3)(cid:18)(cid:52)(cid:45)(cid:45)(cid:32)(cid:50)(cid:50)(cid:152)(cid:3)(cid:3)(cid:55) for £5! YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT Having a healthy gut microbiome has been a hot topic for the past few years. The next natural step is to pay equal attention to your oral microbiome – the good and bad bacteria living in your mouth. Much like the gut, your mouth microbiome benefits from a healthy diet, and new research from the University of Buffalo has shown that a higher intake of sugary or high glycaemic-load foods, such as baked goods, can influence poor oral health in postmenopausal women. More research is underway to examine the impact the oral microbiome has on the rest of the body. K. C O T S R E T T U H S S: H P A R G O T O H P G.
