This led to an unforeseen interest in seventeenth-century rationalism which has lastedeversince.ButIneverwhollyabandonedthehopeofreturning tothetopicwhichintriguedmeasaresearchstudent,andofwriting about it at some length. Despite the many advances in Locke schol- arship during the past few decades I continue to think that there is roomintheliteratureforabookontheissueofhowfarLocke’sthree greatestworkshangtogether.ForthisreasonIhavecomefullcircle.
