Welcome to the Toledo Area Artists 73rd Annual Exhibition, a showcase INTRODUCTION for the best creative efforts from Toledo area artists, sponsored by the Toledo Federation of Art Societies and The Toledo Museum of Art. This yearwe broke new ground, formally adding a categoryto recognize the creative accomplishments of artists who work with video. Special thanks tothe participants in this new medium, and we applaud all ofthe artists who submitted entries forconsideration. Ourjuryof distinguished experts found this year's entries to be of the highest quality, making for an interesting competition and a well-balanced show. We also expanded our eligibility guidelines this year. In addition to accepting entries from current residences in our seventeen countyarea, we opened the 1991 exhibition toformerarea residents as well, expand- ing our pool of both artists and resources. In response, more than 350 artists submitted closeto 1,000 works for consideration - a clear indica- tion ofthe high regardthis cultural event bringstothecityand itsartists. We are most grateful for generous contributions and support from members of the community as well as the Federation's fifteen member groups. Additional recognition and thanks go to Dr. David Steadman, Steve Frushour and the staff of The Toledo Museum of Art for their guidance and assistance in the planning and installation of the show. And a special thank you to the Federation's First Vice President, Helen Zeller, for her countless hours of time and assistance. Lubell President Toledo Federation of Art Societies AWARDS General Awards are selected by the jury on the basis of quality regardless of style or medium. Thejury is authorized to givean award of $1,000 for Best of Show, two First Awards of $500, three Second Awards of $250, and fourThird Awards of $150. The jury also presents the Israel Abramofsky Award of the Temple-Congregation Shomer Emunim of $500 for an outstanding entry in any medium; the Molly Morpeth Canaday Award of $350 foran outstanding painting; the Toledo Area Glass Guild's Dominic Labino Memorial Award of $250 for excellence in glass; the Northwest Ohio Watercolor Society Award of $200; theToledo Friendsof PhotographyAward of$100forexcellence in photography; the Roulet Medal for excellence in painting, graphics or sculpture; and the Craft Club Gold Medal for excellence in crafts. PurchaseAwards are selected bythe.PurchaseAwards Committee ofthe Toledo Federation of Art Societies which consists of the Chairman of the Permanent Collection Committee and Federation officers. Purchase awards are added to the collection of the Toledo Federation of Art Societies. Loans of work from the permanent collection are madeto civic organizations upon request. The Annual Special Award committee presents a certificate of commen- SPECIAL mendation to an individual or an organization who in the past year has AWARD shown unparalleled support and outstanding service to the arts in the Toledo community. This year the Toledo Federation of Art Societies has chosen to honor Stephen Johnston, one of its former presidents, and a man with a strong interest and involvement in the arts. He is a past associate board member of the Art Commission of Greater Toledo, a member of the American Craft Council, and has been president of the Toledo Friends of Photographyand theToledo Potters' Guild. As program coordinator for the Toledo Botanical Garden, he coordinated the Crosby Festival oftheArts, the Art in the Park summerworkshops, and wasthe manager of "The Brass Balloon", forerunner of "The Garden Gallery".
