Theadora Westling has been waiting for her season with much anticipation, just like every other girl. Unfortunately, overhearing one of her parents’ arguments, she realizes that her father no longer has a dowry for her and he has decided to save what little he has for Theadora’s young sister. The young lady is unwilling to accept her fate, and she accepts her cousin’s offer to give her music lessons for a living. However, when the two meet, her cousin reveals her real plan; she wants to hire Theadora as a barmaid in a tavern she is working. Theadora agrees immediately, sensing an adventure on the horizon, even though she knows this would make her father furious.
Unfortunately, Theadora meets Lord Noah Eatonburg at the tavern, a soldier who knows her family and is about to reveal her secret. Theadora desperately asks for him to keep her secret, and Lord Noah tells her that in exchange for his silence, he wants her to gather info about a murder! Terrified, Theadora realizes that she has to choose between breaking the law for this man and returning home defeated. Even though she knows so little about Lord Noah, something in his eyes tells her that she can trust him. However, when real danger begins to surround Theadora, she wonders who Lord Noah really is and why he hunts down murderers. If this man is a spy as she suspects, how can she trust her secret and safety to a man who lies and murders for a living?
