PURPOSE of this dictionary is to give the American equivalents of Japanese military terms and Japanese equivalents of American terms. Available Japanese source material has not, however, been altogether adequate, and the authenticity of a number of the equiva- lents given is doubtful. In some instances, where the true equivalents •were not ascertainable, explanatory paraphrases or literal transla- tions have been provided. The dictionary has been prepared primarily for the use of Ameri- can military personnel with at least a fair knowledge of Japanese, but it should be of value also to users with only a slight knowledge of the language. Japanese terms have been entered in whatever form they ap- peared in the sources consulted. Consequently most adjectives are in the "bungo," or literary, form. Others appear in the normal colloquial form, as used in most written, and all spoken, Japanese. The latter are for the most part terms of general applicability, not strictly military in nature. In addition, some exclusively "bungo" verbs appear. The transcription used is that of the Hepburn system, but with o for the Hepburn wo. In long compounds a hyphen is used before the suffixes gakari and shiki; it is used also after syllabic n (for example, in tan-i, "unit," as distinguished from tani, "valley"). Foreign words having a syllable beginning vtiihfa,Ji,fe, or/o are thus transcribed, although in the kana these syllable initials are rendered nsfu-a^fu-hi,fu-e, undfu-ho, respectively. In arrangement of terms the single-entry method has been used. A term like advance guard will be found only under advance and not under guard. iii e 2gl 1o 6o 5g 4d- 2p 3# 1.bse cu u_ 7/ss 2e 0c et/2g/ac dl.handle.nathitrust.or hh p://ww. MT / htthttp://w 02 20:07 Gdigitized / 5-e- 4-0ogl 1o 0G on 2ain, d m eo neratblic D eu GP Entries are arranged in straight alphabetical order, regardless of whether any given entry consists of one word or more, thus: direct current direction directional direction board direct observation It should be noted that in the Japanese-English part this arrange- ment frequently results in the separation of a term containing suru from its own head word without suru, thus: shojun shojunki shojun shakaku sh6junshu shdjun suru Among various equivalents for a given term, synonyms are sepa- rated by commas, different meanings by semicolons.
