Distalfruits breakofffromtheparent anddispersetonewlocationswhiletheproximal onesstay withtheparent.Thespeciesplaysasignificant roleingeomorphology.Singleor clumped plantsaccumulatesandandaddorganicmattertothesoil,thusprovidingmoreame nablehabitatsfor theestablishmentofsecondarycolonizers.Cakileedentulaexhibits highest germination at alternatingtemperatures of20'e(14.5hr) and lO'e (9.5hrlunder dark con ditions.Lightinhibitsgermination ratesbutnottotalgerminationandfruitsrequirestratifi cationtoovercomedormancy.The plants are infested byfungi andareconsumedbyavariety ofphytophagousinsectsandvertebrates.Thespeciesmanufacturesglucosinolates thatprotect itfromsome insects,fungi.bacteriaand vertebrates.
