Description:Some people have poker; others had
bridge. Centered around the Spring Nationals of the American Contract
Bridge League, the core of human nature is revealed through a remarkable
cast of characters.
Tickets
to the Devil by Richard Powell takes place in Miami Beach in 1968, the
same year the book was published. A national bridge tournament is being
held at a luxury hotel and scores of players, kibitzers and bridge
analysts have gathered to partake in the festivities.
There are a
number of subplots, some intertwined, involving a disparate collection
of individuals all of whom share an unbridled enthusiasm for bridge.
They come from far and wide, ready to play and to socialize. Most of
them are troubled in one way or another, leading to the various
storylines.
Tickets to the Devil combines tragedy and comedy with varying degrees of success.
