ThegenusAthemusLEWIS,1895,wasestablishedforaJapanesespecies,Te(lepho_ 「uSSutu「e11uSMOTSCHULSKY,1860,andatthesametime,CantharisattristataKIEsEN- WETTER,1874,wastransferredtolt.ManyJapanesespecieswerelatertransferredfrom othergenera,oraddedasnewspecies,toAthemusbysubsequententomologists.Until now, forty-one species ofAthemus havebeen recorded from Japan including the RyukyuIslands(TAKAHAsHI,1998).However,sometaxonomicalproblemsstillremajn aboutJapanesespecies. Inrecentyears,wehavereexaminedtheJapanesespeciesofAthemuspreviously recordedaswereunidentified,and foundthatat leastthreeofthemarenew toscience. Ofthese,twowerecollectedfromtheJapanesemainlandandshouldbelongtothesub- genusAndrathemusWITTMER,1978,whiletheotheronewascollected fromthesouth- ern part of the Ryukyu Islands and should belong to the subgenus Atheme11us WITTMER, 1972 (IMASAKA & YAMAJI,1989; IMASAKA & ABIRU, 1989; IMAsAKA & NAKAMURA,1993;anonym,1997).Theywillbedescribedinthepresentpaper. (Andi'athemus) okuyugawalamtsTAKAHAsHl by the characterjstjc colour TheColOu「ofthebodyshowsatendencytobecomeblackishinthesouthwestern a「eaofthedistributionalrangeofthespecies,andtobecomeyellowishintheeastern a「ea(Tablet).However,thismerelyshowsgeographical variationwjthjnthesame Species,becauseitiscontinuousandnomorphologicaldifferencehasbeenobserved except forcoloration.
