Second  Semester  Freshman  Advising     QUIZ:  How  well  do  you  know  your   major? QUIZ:  How  well  do  you  know  your   major?   Today,  we  will  cover  frequently  asked  ques@ons   on  these  topics:   •  Registra@on   •  Courses:  Bio,  Math,  Chem,  and  GEs   •  Grades   •  Gradua@on   •  Careers  and  Research But  before  we  start,  are  you  in  the   right  place?   •  Q:  How  do  I  change  my  major  to  something   other  than  Bio?   •  A:  Go  to  Admissions  and  Records  (LH-­‐114)  and   fill  out  the  “Change  of  Academic  Objec@ve”   form  ($10  fee).    When  you  bring  the  form  to   the  Bio  Dept  to  be  signed,  the  Bio  Dept  staff   will  release  your  hold. QUIZ:  How  well  do  you  know  your   major?   Today,  we  will  cover  frequently  asked  ques@ons   on  these  topics:   •  Registra@on   •  Courses:  Bio,  Math,  Chem,  and  GEs   •  Grades   •  Gradua@on   •  Careers  and  Research Q:  If  I’m  working  20  hours  per  week,   how  many  units  should  I  register  for?   A:  Working  20  hours/week,  the   recommended  maximum  is  9-­‐12  units.   The  more  hours  you’re  working,  the   fewer  units  you  should  be  taking.     School  is  like  a  job!   (see  guidelines  next  slide) PLANNING YOUR COURSEWORK General  guidelines  to  balance  work   Many CSUF students work. This impacts the amount of time students have outside hours  and  unit  totals   of class to study. If You Are Employed: Then Your School Work Should Be: (Hours Per Week) (Maximum Units Per Semester) 0 16 1 – 9 14 – 15 10 – 19 13 – 14 20 – 29 9 – 12 30 – 39 6 – 9 40 + 3 - 9 This plan is based on a 60-hour work week (employment plus school work, and not including other time commitments, such as commuting) and the need to study for: 2 hours for each 3 hours lab 3 hours for each 1 hour lecture If You Complete: You Will Graduate In: 30 units per year ............................................................................................... 4 years 24 units per year ............................................................................................... 5 years 20 units per year ............................................................................................... 6 years Use one of the matrices on the following 2 pages to plan your college coursework. TO BE A SUCCESSFUL TITAN STUDY 25 - 35 12 revised 7/11/13 Q:  I  want  to  take  more  units  because  I   feel  like  I’m  behind.    Most  Bio  majors   graduate  in  4  years,  right?   A:  No,  less  than  10%  of  Bio  majors   finish  in  4  years.    Most  Bio  majors   graduate  in  5  or  6  years.         (So  please  do  not  overload  yourself  with  units   because  you  feel  “behind”!  Your  grades  will  suffer.) Q:  What  does  “upper  division”  mean?   A:  “Upper  division”  means  300-­‐400   level.    Note  ALL  community  college   courses  are  “lower-­‐division.” Q:  I  want  to  take  a  course  at  a   community  college.  How  will  I  know   the  course  credit  will  transfer  to  CSUF?     A:  Check  the  transfer  course   equivalencies  at  www.assist.org.       When  the  course  is  over,  have  the   community  college  send  your  transcript   to  Admissions  and  Records.
