Select a day: M | T | W | Th | F | S | Su Posted on Fri, Nov. 15, 2002 New license has more security By NANCY BOSARGE THE SUN HERALD The Mississippi Highway Patrol Drivers License Bureau is now offering a new driver's license that combines secure digital identification with some of the leading facial recognition software and equipment. Biloxi is already using the new technology and all driver's license bureaus throughout the state should have the technology to create the new licenses by Tuesday. Capt. Jody Rigby of the Jackson MHP Headquarters said the new license was chosen for several reasons. "The new license we wanted to be easier to read, very distinguishable between different types of identification, harder to tamper with and to help secure the identity of the person," Rigby said. The license fades from dark to light, so it is harder to copy on a machine. Each type of license is distinguishable by color: Regular driver's licenses are green; commercial truck drivers' licenses are red; ID cards are blue; and gun permits are yellow. IDs and driver's licenses for people under age 21 are green and are vertically oriented. The license card also offers two new features, an optional fingerprint touch signature, in which a picture of the bearer's fingerprint appears on the front of the card above the license number, and an electronic signature on the front of the card. With the new computer system used to create the license cards comes a new camera that has higher resolution and uses facial recognition software, which can search a computer database to identify the card bearer. The back of the license cards have two strips, a metallic strip, which stores name and birth date of the bearer, and a bar-coded strip. "The bar code contains 23 or 24 security issues, covert and overt," Rigby said. "Some of it does have to do with things we implemented after 9/11 - homeland security." email this | print this News | Business | Sports | Entertainment | Living | Classifieds Help | Contact Us | Site Index | Archives | Place an Ad | Newspaper Subscription out SunHerald.com | About Realcities Network | Terms of Use | Press Center | Cop
