B2E3e-book.indb 5 1/16/12 11:39 AM About the Authors Charles Blair- Broeker has taught psychology at Cedar Falls High School (Iowa) since 1978. He has been involved in a number of APA initiatives, serving as a member of the task force that authored the National Standards for High School Psychology Curricula, as chair of the executive board of Teach- ers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS), and as co- editor of the fourth volume of the APA’s Activities Handbook for the Teaching of Psychology. For three years, Charlie co- directed Teaching the Science of Psychology, a summer institute for high school psychology teachers supported by the National Science Foundation and the Northern Kentucky University Foundation. He has been a Question Leader, Rubric Writer, Table Leader, or Reader for Advanced Placement Psychology Examinations since the test was first administered in 1992, completed a three- year term on the AP Psychology Test Devel- opment Committee, and led many conferences on AP Psychol- ogy. He served on the steering committees for the American Psychological Association National Conference on Undergraduate Education in Psychology and the Psychology Partner- ships Project. Among his teaching awards are the Grinnell College Outstanding Iowa Teacher Award, the University of Iowa Distinguished Teacher Award, and the APA Division 2 Teaching Excellence Award. Randy Ernst met Charlie at a month- long psychology teacher institute in 1991 and has taught introductory psychology at both the high school and college level for over 20 years. He co- authored the National Standards for High School Psy- chology Curricula, co- edited the fourth volume of the APA’s Activities Handbook for the Teaching of Psychology, and has had journal articles published in American Psychologist and the Oxford Review of Education. Randy helped found and chaired the APA’s Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS), was a founding member of the College Board’s AP Psychology Test Development Committee, and has served as a Table Leader, Question Leader, and Exam Leader at the annual AP Psychology Reading. Randy co- authored several TOPSS unit plans, and his interest in curriculum develop- ment led to a six- month appointment in Australia, where he worked with Martin Seligman to infuse positive psychology concepts into a K– 12 school system. Randy has provided in- service training on the teaching of psychology to teachers around the United States and Canada and has worked several psychology-r elated workshops in England, Australia, and Thailand. He has also worked with the University of Pennsylvania to teach resilience techniques to American soldiers. Honors include induction into his high school’s hall of fame (Broken Bow, NE) in 2010, Nebraska’s 2006 Social Studies Educator of the Year Award, the NAACP’s 2004 Service to Children Award, and Time Warner’s “Crystal Apple” National Teacher Award. Both the APA and the University of Nebraska have recognized Randy for excellence in teaching. . . . and special consultant David Myers received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Iowa. He has spent his entire 30- year professional teaching career at Hope College, in Holland, Michigan, where he is the John Dirk Werkman Professor of Psychology. He has taught dozens of introductory psychology sections. Hope College students have invited him to be their commencement speaker and voted him “outstanding professor.” His scientific articles have appeared in over two dozen scientific periodicals, including Science, American Scientist, and American Psychologist, and he has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. In addition to his scholarly writing and his textbooks, Myers’ Psychology for AP*, Psychology, Psychology in Modules, Exploring Psychology, Exploring Psychology in Modules, and Social Psychology, he has written about psycho- logical science for general readers. His writings have appeared in more than two dozen magazines, from Today’s Education to Scientific American.
