It was only after Jean Anouilh had met Andre Barsacq, a then unknown director who envisioned the play's merits, that his "Commedie-ballet• was performed. Between that time and his death in 1987, Anouilh wrote over 50 plays, as well as a number off ilm scripts for cinema and television. He is recognized as one of the most important dramatists of the century. The play's chann lies in the dances, the disguises, the incompetant thieves, the defeat of the socially ambitiow Dupont-Duforts, and Lady Hur!, a kindly old aristocrat whose mild eccentricity hides a wealth of wisdom and the inevitably happy ending. Director, Gerry Gross, a Concordia Professor in the Department of Theatre, is well known around the theatre community. 1Vost recently he directed Les Belles Soeurs at the Chameleon Studio. Before that, he directed his own adaptation of the Alice stories in which the Knave ofH earts is brought to court for stealing the tarts and Alice is called as a wimess.
