INNOVATION, COLLABORATION
AND IMPLEMENTATION
Greetings!
Welcome to 2008, the beginning of a new year. Each day, month and year
allows us to start anew as we resolve to make positive changes. As we embrace

this New Year, let us not forget our mission and purpose, the essence of our

Our organization has undergone a metamorphosis since its founding in

1922. The metamorphosis can be likened to crystal, the only inanimate thing
that grows. As the years pass it changes its lines and shape but continues to
retain the same perfect form in accordance with nature’s plan; just as Sigma
Gamma Rho Sorority retains its mission of service. We have endured because
we realize, to paraphrase the words of Alice Walker, “To the extent that it is
possible, we must live and make Sigma‘s world today as we wish those members
that follow to live in it in the future.” Our greatest contribution is to realize that
each of us is privileged to be a member of this great organization and should
not take our privilege for granted.
In not taking our privilege for granted, we must think change. Change – the
very word may pose a challenge for some of us, but we have had to change
how we think; how we respond to situations; and how we initiate actions out
of societal demands. Change may be exciting, different, stressful, or perhaps
all of those mentioned, but change we must if our organization is to continue
Soror moving forward.
A wonderful truth about change is that it is a natural way of life. Let’s think

for a moment where we envision our organization ten years from now. Autumn
Ed.D. trees provide and example as their leaves change and fall. The trees would
become stunted and withered if they held on to old, dried foliage. And so it is
20th International with our organization as we continue to fulfill the dream of our founders. We

must be about our organization, not a region, chapter or member.
Let us be change agents who follow the prescribed set of practices
known as a discipline for the purpose of reaffirming our commitment to
our organization and to each other. Let us develop and implement a plan
that overcomes negative thinking and unproductive behaviors; or perhaps
unpleasant memories of plans that didn’t work out that are preventing us from
trying one more time. Let this be a time that we move forward with zeal and
enthusiasm, giving and receiving, committing to purposeful, rewarding goals
that establish our sorority in all arenas.
May this year bring happiness, joy and fulfillment; a year that expectations
flow from your vision, faith, hope and love.

Dear Sorors,
When we look over our lives, we realize how much we have
overcome. Often times, we forget about how it felt to “go through”
the rough times. Other times, we remember the negative past too
much. Each day, we need to look more and find the joy in life. Make
a big deal of it. Instead of calling on a friend to cry with, call on a

Throughout my life, I have experienced some good and bad
from the
personally and with Sigma. In February last year, a gentleman got on

one knee and proposed to me. This was something that I thought I
would never experience again given the trials of my first marriage.
We later when on to seal our vows in Aruba while the saltwater waves
crashed against the rocks. It was an exciting time in our lives.
Shortly thereafter, we found out we were expecting. With a 13-
year old child already running our schedules, I could not believe it.
Soon our happiness turned to worry. We received news that our child
could be terminal and/or may face some significant challenges. I
literally spent the first two trimesters in sheer fear and worry. This
was one of those rough times. Somehow I forgot the joy that I just
experienced. I forgot that God was a healer of all situations and that
faith was key, not fear. We received some good news after I let go
and let God move. Our son was going to be fine. On March 27, 2008,

As I look at the lesson learned in these last 18 months, I have to say
that I almost forgot that God allows things to come our way to test

our faith. This is true even in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

When we leave conferences, we are sometimes upset at how votes
may have ended, how a soror spoke about our region/chapter, how
we had no seat for an event, etc. However, the joy in these special
meetings is that we see old faces, new faces, learn more, see exciting
things happening, witness leadership changes, etc. There are some
rough experiences, yet many good ones that allow us to celebrate
our sisterhood and our great service.
As we look forward to our Boule this July, let us remember that this
is another milestone for our sisterhood. Let’s take time to reflect
on those great times we have had at other conferences. Let us look
to the future and trust God for everything in our lives, including
our beloved Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. It is my hope to see all
of my sorors at this Boule. This will truly be another joy. Enjoy this
wonderful issue of The AURORA.
