F. Lucks, Chairman of the First International Thermal Conductivity Conference. FOREWORD The International Thermal Conductivity Conference was started in 1961 with the initiative of Mr. Charles F. Lucks, who passed away on 8 July 1982 and to the memory of whom this volume is dedicated. These Conferences on thermal conductivity grew out of the needs of researchers in the field. The Conferences were held annu ally from 1961 to 1973 and have been held biennially since 1975 when our Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) of Purdue University became the Permanent Sponsor of the Conferences. These Conferences provide a broadly based forum for researchers actively working on the thermal conduc tivity and closely related properties to convene on a regular basis to exchange their ideas and experiences and report their findings and results. The Conferences have been self-perpetuating and are an example of how a technical community with a common purpose can transcend the invisible, artificial barriers between disciplines and gather together in increasing numbers without the need of national pub licity and continuing funding support, when they see something worthwhile going on. It is believed that this series of Conferences not only will grow stronger, but will set an example for research ers in other fields on how to jointly attack their own problem areas. Of the first thirteen Conferences, only four published formal volumes of proceedings. However, effective with the Fourteenth Conference, a policy of publishing formal volumes of proceedings on a continuing and uniform basis has been established. Thus, including the present volume, the following formal volumes of pro ceedings have been published: vii Conference (Year) Title of Volume Publisher and Year 7th THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY U.S. Government Printing (1967) Proceedings of the Seventh Office (1968) Conference 8th THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY Plenum Press (1969) (1968) Proceedings of the Eighth Conference 9th NINTH CONFERENCE ON THERMAL U.S. Atomic Energy (1969) CONDUCTIVITY Commission (1970) 13th ADVANCES IN THERMAL University of Missouri, (1973) CONDUCTIVITY, Papers Rolla (1974) Presented at XIII Inter national Conference on Thermal Conductivity 14th THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY 14 Plenum Press (1976) (1975) 15th THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY 15 Plenum Press (1978) (1977) 16th THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY 16 Plenum Press (1982) (1979) 17th THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY 17 Plenum Press (1982) (1981) 18th THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY 18 Plenum Press (1984) (1983) Dr. T. Ashworth, Chairman of the Eighteenth Conference is to be congratulated for his excellent leadership in conducting the Conference; the painstaking efforts of Dr. Ashworth and his co editor, Dr. David R. Smith, made the present volume possible. CINDAS looks forward to working with future host institutions to ensure that future Conferences continue to produce high-quality volumes of proceedings in this important. specialized field. C. Y. Ho Director Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis August 1984 and Synthesis West Lafayette, Indiana Purdue University viii PREFACE The 18th International Thermal Conductivity Conference (ITCC) was held at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Rapid City, South Dakota on 3 - 5 October, 1983. It was hosted by the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T); the conference chairman was T. Ashworth. RE/SPEC Inc. of Rapid City was a sponsor of the conference, with continuing sponsorship from CINDAS/Purdue University. In addition to the chairman, the other local committee members were D. R. Smith, SDSM&T E. Ashworth, SDSM&T W. B. Krause, RE/SPEC Inc. J. D. Patterson, SDSM&T R. D. Redin, SDSM&T A. H. Redin, Spouses Program. Papers presented covered a wide range of aspects of thermal conductivity; special sessions were organized on glassy materials, insulations, the high-temperature flash-laser method, and geologic materials. Following welcomes by D. L. McElroy, Chairman of the International Thermal Conductivity Conferences, R. A. Schleusener, President of SDSM&T, Arthur P. LaCroix, Mayor of Rapid City, and Paul F. Gnirk, President of RE/SPEC Inc., the technical portion of the conference began with a Keynote Address by M. H. Cohen (EXXON) on "Metastable Liquids and the Nature of the Glass Transition". This was followed by an invited paper by R. Berman (Oxford University) entitled "Solid Helium: A Review". Additional invited papers (G. K. White (CSIRO) on "Lattice Thermal Conductivity at Normal and High Temperature"; G. A. Slack (GE) on "Pressure Effects on Thermal Conductivity"; P. G. Klemens (University of Connecticut) on "Theory of the Thermal Conductivity of Amorphous Solids"; R. Taylor (UMIST) on "Thermal Diffusivity of Layered and Fibrous Composites"; G. W. Milton (Cornell University) on "Estimating the Thermal Conductivity of Composites") were intermingled with 81 contributed papers. This mixture gave an enjoyable and stimulating balance between review and research papers. For the first time a poster ix session was included. Eleven papers were presented in this session, which was well attended with a high level of interest; the experiment was deemed a substantial success. Overall statistics for the meeting include 109 registered delegates (75 from the U.S., 9 from Canada, and 25 from 11 countries around the world), and 89 presentations involving 140 authors. Additional activities included visits to the SDSM&T Physics Department Thermophysical Properties Laboratory and RE/SPEC's Thermomechanical Laboratories, a mid-conference tour in the Black Hills, including Mount Rushmore, culminating in an informal banquet at the Chute Roosters in Hill City, and a special, invited presen tation by L. Korb (Rockwell International) on "The Space Shuttle Orbiter Thermal Protection System"; this presentation brought the formal business of the conference to an end. At the banquet the Thermal Conductivity Award was presented jointly to M. L. Minges of the Air Force Materials Laboratory, Wright-Patterson AFB. and G. K. White of CSIRO, Australia. Also R. U. Acton and P. Wagner, both of Sandia National Laboratories, were elected to Fellowships of the ITCC. On a personal note, as Chairman of the 18th ITCC, I would like to express my appreciation to all the people who helped to make this conference a success. In particular I would like to extend my thanks to Dave McElroy and Jerry Hust for their encouragement and guidance, to the session chairmen for their services at the conference and for their help in obtaining reviews of the papers submitted for these proceedings, to the invited speakers for their wonderful presentations, to the members of the local committee for their assistance, and especially to my three main helpers, my secretary Mabel Miessner, my co-editor David Smith and my wife, Eileen. The next meeting in this series will be held at Tennessee Technological University, under the chairmanship of D. W. Yarbrough, October, 1985. I look forward to seeing you all then. Rapid City, SD. T.
