Founded at the Department of Psychiatry at Mt. Sinai Hospital, CANY now works in 24 leading social service agencies, special schools, and community centers serving 1,000 children and adults in the greater New York area and Connecticut. Cultivated over years of clinical and artistic practice, CANY has developed its own unique trauma-informed drama therapy model to help clients move beyond their past and into a future of hope and promise. This year, we celebrate past accomplishments and the future expansion of CANY’s direct services and professional development programs. As an artist/activist, her body of work displays her commitment to roles that fuse social action with art by challenging societal norms and heightening the audience’s consciousness about community and world issues. Although widely known as an actress, singer and producer, her everyday life is committed to using her gifts to empower the community. As an award-winning actress of screen and stage, her personal commitment to exploring characters seldom played by women of color has allowed her to create a canon of enigmatic and complex roles. She is a graduate of Illinois State University and a student in the Master’s Program in Jazz Vocals at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. In the community, she is a lifetime member of Girl Scouts of America, The National Council of Negro Women, Sigma Alpha Lambda (a national leadership and honors organization), Jack and Jill of America, Inc. She is also on the National Board of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc. Suzzanne Douglas • Actress & Patron of the Arts L A A IFETIME CHIEVEMENT WARD David McCorkle, LICSW has served on CANY’s Board of Directors since 1999. He is the senior faculty and site consultant member for the Sanctuary Institute at Andrus Children's Center. Previously, he was the Sanctuary Project Manager and co-coordinated the NIMH Research Project of the Sanctuary Model with Columbia University and research staff at The Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services Residential Programs. David has published a number of academic articles on the Sanctuary Model and co-wrote a chapter on traumatic losses in the book, Loss, Hurt and Hope. David is also a veteran Broadway performer.
