The aim is to focus on the scientific production of significant authors whose works are outstanding contributions to the devel- opment of the psychoanalytic field and to set out relevant ideas and themes, generated during the history of psychoanalysis, that deserve to be discussed by present psychoanalysts. The relation- ship between psychoanalytic ideas and their applications has to be put forward from the perspective of theory, clinical practice, technique, and research so as to maintain their validity for con- temporary psychoanalysis. The Publication Committee’s objective is to share these ideas with the psychoanalytic community and with professionals in other related disciplines, in order to expand their knowledge and generate a productive interchange between the text and the reader. With this collection of Madeleine and Willy Baranger’s main significant papers, the Publications Committee achieves the aim of publishing and expanding the Barangers’ oeuvre in the English vii viii Psychoanalytic ideas and applications series language and, consequently, reaching a broader spectrum of read- ers. These contributions represent a pioneering and anticipatory work of great interest to the psychoanalytic world. Their proposals concerning the concepts of psychoanalytic field, “basic unconscious fantasy”, bastion, and insight address the whole question of the analytic situation and anticipate current debates. Special thanks are due to Mrs Madeleine Baranger for her in- valuable assistance and to Cláudio Laks Eizirik for his Foreword to this volume.
