Composed by prominent scholars in Anglo-Saxon studies, these essays honor the depth and breadthofPatrickW.Conner’sinfluenceinourdiscipline. Patrick W. Conner is Eberly Centennial Professor of Arts and Sciences Emeritus at West Virginia University. He is author of Anglo-Saxon Exeter: A Tenth-Century Cultural History (1993), editor of the reconstructed Abingdon ver- sionoftheAnglo-SaxonChronicle(1996)forCambridge’scollaborativeeditionof the Anglo-SaxonChronicle,and oneof the acknowledged expertsonthe Exeter BookofOldEnglishpoetry.HeisaformerExecutiveDirectoroftheInternational SocietyofAnglo-Saxonists(1991–1997)andwasinductedasanhonorarymember in2011.He served on the editorial boardofthe Old English Newsletterand was Chair of the English department at WVU (1994–2000) and director of the West VirginiaUniversityPress(1999–2008).Healsohasthedubiouscredentialofhav- ingdirectedmydoctoraldissertation.Inmyview,thislastachievementwasobvi- ouslythecrowningoneinalongandillustriouscareer.Ifitwasonlythroughme that Pat’s legacy lived on, others might say, there would be some cause for alarm.Thankfully,itishardtoassesswhichofhislegaciesismostprofound.As ascholar,teacher,editor,administrator,andinnovator,Pathasbeenaleaderin thedisciplineofAnglo-Saxonstudiesforfourdecades. HeearnedhisPh.D.attheUniversityofMaryland(1975)withadissertation ontheExeterBook.AfterabriefstintatGoucherCollege,Patmadehisdebutat West Virginia University in 1976. After 35 years of service the name of this Universityisnow,amongAnglo-Saxonists,simplysynonymouswithPat’s.His influential “Booklet Theory” of the Exeter Book, first published in “The Structure of theExeter Book Codex” (1986), proposes on codicological and pa- leographicalgroundsthattheExeterBookwascompletedasthreeoriginallyin- dependent booklets. Different forms of membrane, soiled outer leaves, as well asthedistributionofdecorativeinitialsandspecialletterforms,offerclearsup- portforthehypothesis.TomBredehoft’scontributiontothisvolumeoffersfur- ther,metricalsupportforthecompositionoftheExeterBookaccordingtoPat’s Booklet Theory. Conner further suggests that the paleographical differences can be explained by a significant passage of time between the completion of one booklet and the next.
