Description:
This book is composed of three parts. Part I gives a chronological history of the
Universal Postal Union. It shows its development during the century and ties its pro
gress into that of the world and its sovereign states. While all major aspects of the
UPU are presented, special attention is devoted to those events that were philatelically
commemorated. This history is followed by a discussion of the UPU as it exists and
functions today. While neither unduly lengthy nor extensively technical, Part I provides
the reader with an understanding of this vital international organization now observing
its lOOth birthday. It is the first comprehensive study of the Universal Postal Union and
its component agencies to be published in this country in a decade.
Part II gives a brief history of the Union's member-nations, comprising nearly all
countries of the world today and being fifteen more than the total membership of the
United Nations. The history of each is followed by the date of the admission of that
country into the Union, of its first postage stamp and a list and dates of its UPU
issues.
Part III comprises over two-thirds of the book and catalogs all UPU commemora
tive issues through 1973. These are divided into seven catagories: 1. Centenary of the
Paris Postal Conference (P 1-P2 3); 2. Anniversaries of the UPU (U A 1-U A 7 48); 3.
International Bureau (UB1-UB9); 4. Congresses and other UPU Meetings (UCl
UC153); 5. Dedications (UDI-UD124); 6. Entry or Anniversary of Entry of a nation
into UPU (UEl-UE84); 7. Miscellaneous or fringe issues (UFI-UF21).
