Dr Cabot works with other medical doctors and her team of naturopaths; her practices are situated in Camden and Broadway, Sydney, NSW. Dr Sandra Cabot began studying nutritional medicine ae she was a medical student and has been a pioneer in the area of holistic healing. She graduated in medicine with honours from the University of Adelaide, South Australia in 1975. During the1980s Dr Cabot worked as a volunteer in the largest missionary Christian hospital in India, tending to the poor indigenous women. Dr Cabot pilots herself to many cities and country towns in Australia where she is invited to speak at seminars and exhibitions. Margaret has a particular interest in disorders of the digestive and immune systems. She has researched environmental medicine encompassing the effects of environmental ehenicals on health and disease. Margaret is a keen researcher and writer, and enjoys keeping abreast of new developments in the health industry. She is currently working with Dr Cabot on a book about cholesterol. Forrworp I am a firm believer in the value of supporting the detoxification systems in the body especially in this day and age, where mankind has disturbed the natural environment and the food chain. The fact that we are exposed to more toxic chemicals and rapidly spread infections than ever before, is unquestionable. I see many patients with disorders of their immune system and liv- er who have been unable to get an accurate diagnosis or effective treatment from drug therapy. These patients find that a so called “healthy conventional diet” does not improve their health. So what are these patients to do? Surely they do not want to give up in their search for a solution and accept a life of poor health! If you are in this situation, I would encourage you to try a safe and effective detoxification program, such as you will find in this book. I think it is a great idea to use regular detox strategies everyday, even if you are in relatively good health, as a preventative measure to keep your immune system strong. This includes juicing of raw vegetables, as this provides a high concentration of antioxidants to support the liver detoxification pathways. You can also include the specific foods and supplements mentioned in the body of this book on a regular basis in your daily life to keep your immune system strong. There is a huge body of evidence available to show that those who consume a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables and take antioxidants such as selenium, zinc, vitamin C and vitamin E have a stronger immune system. Still there are detractors out there who heap scorn on the virtues of detoxification diets and cleansing diets, saying that they are useless or even dangerous. So let us examine their arguments against the value of detoxification diets. Many of these diets prescribe a huge intake of water of up to 4 to 5 litres daily. If they do, they are too fanatical, as excess water intake, especially if combined with fasting, can cause an imbalance in the concentration of sodium in the body, which is called hyponatraemia. It is true that sodium deficiency can lead to swelling of the brain and coma and convulsions. So be wary of fanatical detoxification diets that tell you to drink more than 3 litres of water daily with ONLY raw fruits and vegetables. I am not advocating that. Detox your body and save your health 7 Foreworp p)S ome of these detoxification programs excessively restrict the intake of protein and carbohydrates, which may disrupt metabolism resulting in low levels of albumin in the blood stream and unstable blood sugar levels. Our 2-week detoxifica- tion diet is nutritionally balanced and provides you with adequate protein and carbohydrate. 3 Detox diets are always dangerous. This is not true, as they should be temporary and they are far safer than a diet high in sugar, fried take away foods, refined processed foods and alcohol. However if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, very under- weight, diabetic or suffer with any chronic medical illness you should NOT follow ANY detoxification diet. You should always consult your own doctor in such cases. Some detractors say that your liver and kidneys are able to 4 detoxify your body without any help from you, which as- sumes that they are always working at 100% efficiency. This is not always true. For example if you have a fatty liver where the liver’s filter is overloaded with fat, bacteria and toxins, it will not ——_—— cleanse the blood stream efficiently. Like any filter in any engine, ‘the liver filter needs cleansing, and unfortunately you cannot unzip your abdomen and take out your liver and wash it with running water and a degreasing agent! Nearly 20% of the population has a fatty liver because of years of incorrect diet and damage from drugs and environmental toxins. Many drugs and environmental toxins over work the natural detoxification pathways and filtering mechanisms in the liver and kidneys. This is one of the reasons that unexplained liver and kidney disease is so common. Infections in the body (either hidden or apparent infections) can cause diseases of the kidneys and heart, so obviously in such cases, the natural detox and defense systems in the body were not func- tioning at 100% of their capacity. If the infection is resistant to an- tibiotics or anti-viral drugs, your only hope lies in bolstering your natural immune defenses and detoxification pathways. Infections release toxins that your body needs help to deal with; if not these infections would never cause diseases. 8 The Ultimate Detox
