Then,aswewerethinkingaboutourtriptoJapan,wewerebesiegedon allsideswithreportsaboutLeoStraussinthemedia.Whenwestudiedwith him,hewasknownwellinasmallcirclebutlargelyunknownoutsidethat circle.Allofasuddenhewasbeingpronouncedthethinkerbehindever- largersetsofpoliticalactorsandpolicies,butmostespeciallyhewasbeing identifiedas“thebrains”behindGeorgeW.BushandtheIraqWar.Hav- ingourselvessometimesbeenfrustratedbyhowremoteStrauss’sthinking usuallywasfrompracticalpoliticsandpolicy,weweregenerallyastonished toseethathehadbecome—orwassaidtohavebecome—arealmoverand shakerinWashington.WhatwassaidaboutStraussinthemediacoverage madehimsoundlikeaverypowerfulpersonage,butthatimageofStrauss wasfarfromthewayhepresentedhimself—asaratherdetachedfellow,by nomeansuninterestedinpolitics,butnotaimingtorunthecountryfrom thebackroom.
