Inthefirstplace, Iamgoingto takeup the trechinescollectedintheZhongdianareainnorthwesternYunnan. Theabbreviationsusedinthispaperarethesameasthoseexplainedinprevious papersofmine.ThestandardratiosofAgonot,-ec11usfat,kaciarecalculatedonthebasis of24specimens(12 d 12 )randomlypickedup,includingapairoftheparatypes. Legs short and fairly stout, of ordinary conformation for amember of Ago- notrechus. Ihaveseenall thedescribedspeciesofAgonotrechus(s lat),whichincludefour topotypicalspecimensofTrec11ussic11uanicolaDEuvE(1989,p 317, figs 3, 6) col- lectedbymyselfandsixtopotypicalspecimensofBhutanotrechusslchuanlcolaven- t,-osior identifiedbyDEuvEhimself,andIamconfident thatthesetaxaandBhutano- trechusfarkaclaredecisivelydifferentinevolutionarytrend fromBhutanott-echusre- fexlco11isS.UENo(1977,p. l92, figs 9-11).Thelatterisalargelong-leggedspecies ofelongatebody form,inwhichtheprothoraxisbarrel-shape(i,theprehumeralborder ofelytraisobliteratedat theinternalend,andtheelytral striaeareobliteratedalto- gether. 0nthecontrary, themembersofAgonotrechusarealwaysshort-leggedand moreor lessshort-bodied,withtheprothoraxwidestdistinctlybeforethemiddleand 64 Shun-lobiUE、・o withtheelytraeitherentirelyoralmostentirelystriatedandcompletelyborderedatthe prehumera1parts.ThethreetaxadescribedbyDEuvEperfectlyfallinthiscategoryand sharenoneofthediagnosticfeaturesofBhutanott-echus. ltistruethattheseapterous speciesaresomewhatdifferent fromfully winged,ordinaryspeciesofAgonotr-echus andmaybediscriminatedinaspecies-groupof theirown,but themembersofthis primitivegenus isusually rathervariableinmorphological features,aboveall inthe numberofelytra1dorsalpores,conditionofhindwings,andthenumberofparamera1 setae.Thevariationoftenappearsindividually,notonlyinter-specifically. DEuvE(1995,p it)consideredthathisfat・kaci isdifferent fromslchuanlcola in thenumberofparamera1setae,four intheformerandseveninthelatter.However,this character iso量onunstableinsuchprimitivegeneraas n-echiama andAgot1otrechus, andin thethreetaxaconcerned,thenumber varies from fivetoseveninsl(/nlanicola, fromfourtofive(probablymore)invent,-os1or,andfromfourtosixinfat・kacl.0nthe otherhand,vent,・oslo,seemsspecificallydifferent fromsichtianlcola.It isintermediate inbothexternalandgenitalic featuresbetweenslchtlanlcolaandfa,kaci,andmaybe evenclosertothelatter.Fromslchlla,licola,itisdistinguishedbythefollowingdetails: Colourdarker,whollyblackish,sometimesalittlebrownishat theposteriorpart ofheadandantero-latera1partsofpronotumbutneveronelytra, whichare faintly iri- descent;ventralsurfaceblack; femorausually infuscate.Forebodysmallerinpropor- tiontolargehindbody. Headwitheyessomewhat larger onanaverageandusually moreconvex,usuallyaslongasgenaebutsometimes12timesas longasthelatter. Prothorax less transverse,PW/HW 140-1.46 (M I44) [1.50-1.53 (M I 51) inA. sIchuanlcola],PW/Pi t37-1.45 (M I42) [1.47-1.53 (M I49) inA.slchuanlcola], widestatalevelalittlenearertothemiddle,lesscontractedatapexandusuallynar- roweratbase,PW/PA t56-1.62 (M I59) [1.62-1.69(M I65) inA.sic;1uanlcola], PW/PB131-1.41(MI35)[1.25-1.32(MI29)inA.sichuanicola],PB/PA1.15-1.21 (M1.18) [1.23-1.33(M I28) inA.slchuanlcola],withthesideslesswidelyreflexed, lessstronglybutmoreevenlyarcuate,andmoredeeplysinuatejustbeforehindangles, whicharemoreprotrudentpostero-1aterad.Elytralarger,shortandbroad,widest at aboutmiddle;EW/PW162-1.73(M I67) [1.48-1.54(M I51) inA.sichuanlcola], EL/PL3.06-3.19(M3.l3)[2.97-3.15(M3.06)inA.slchtianicola],EL/EW130-1.36 (M I32) [1.34-1.37(M I36)inA.slchtlanicola];sidesmoreregularlyarcuate from shoulderstoapices,whicharealittlemoreprominent;striaeshallower especiallyat thesideandmorefinelypunctate,thoughalmostentirewiththeexceptionoftheante- riorhalfofstria8,whichisalmostalwaysevanescent.Aedeagusabouttwo-seventhsas longaselytra,lessstronglycurvedventradthaninA.sichuanlcola;viewedlaterally, apical lobebroaderandnarrowlyroundedattheextremity[distinctlymoreacuminate towardsbluntextremityinA.sichuanlcola];vieweddorsally,apicallobegraduallynar- rowedtowardsnarrowlyroundedapex[abruptlynarrowedattheleve1ofapicalorifice andsubparallel-sided tonear thebluntlyendingextremity inA.sichuanlcola];each stylebearing fourorfiveapicalsetaeoftensupplementedbyaminutesubapicalacces- soryseta. DEuvE described “Ie pronotum plus transverse (It/Lt 1,57)” in vent,-osio1- than in slchtianlcola,butinthespecimensbeforeme,theprothoraxisconstantlynarrower in the former than in thelatter. AccordingtoSMETANA,Ago,lot,-e(、11usfca,-kact isabundantinthesubalpine forests onMt.XueShan.HiscollectingsitesC36,38,39and40lieina''highmontaneconif- erous forest with intermixedbirches and rhododendrons” and the trechine beetle was collectedby“s量l ingvariousforestfloordebris,mossandpiecesofrottingwood”The siteC41isa“mixed broadleaved andconiferous forest(Ables, Betula,Rhododend,-on, etc.),”andthecollectionwasmadeby“siftingleaflitterandother forest floordebris, particularlypilesofrottingwoodanddebrisbelowthem” Quel'l'tectrechusglobipennisS.UENo,spnov. Headtransversewithwideneck,depressedabove; frontal furrowsdeepespecially ondorsum,notangulate,andwidelydivergentposteriad; fronsandsupraorbitalareas moderatelyconvex,thelatterwithtwopairofsupraorbitalsetaeonlinesdivergentpos- teriorly, theanterior setaeclearly foveolateat thebases; eyessmall and flat, only slightlylonger thangenae, whichareconvexandaboutseven-ninthsaslongaseyes; neck constrictiondistinct at thesidesthoughnot verydeep; labrumtransverse,shal- lowlyemarginateatapex;mandiblesstout,sharplyhookedatapices;palpishortand stout, with penultimatesegmentswidely dilated towardsapices; antennaealsoshort andstout,subfiliform,reachingbasalthree-tenthsofelytra,segment2aboutfive-sixths aslongas3andsubequa1inlengthtoeachof4-10,segments6-10eachovalandalit- tlemorethant5timesaslongaswide,terminalsegmentthelongest. Pronotum small, subcordate, wider than hea wider than long, widest at two- thirds from base, and more strongly narrowed towards base than towards apex; PW/HW 124, PW/PL 1.15,PW/PA ca. l 36, PW/PB146; sides finelybordered in apicalthree-fifthsbutimmarginatebehind,stronglyarcuateinfront,lesssobehind,and deeplysinuateatbasalsixth,probablywithtwopairofmarginalsetaethoughthepos- teriorpairislackingintheholotype;apexwider thanbase,PB/PAca.093,withfront 66 Shun-lobiUEト◆o Fig. l. Atfirstsight,thisnewspecieslookslikeamemberofDeuveot,-ectlusdue tothehemiglobular hindbody. It is, however,obviousthat thepresent trechineisa thirdspeciesofQueinnectrec111lsinviewoftheposteriorlyevanescent lateralborders ofpronotum, theanteriorlydiminishedprehumera1bordersofelytra, theabsenceof preapica1pore,andaboveall,thedigitiformprocessesformedbythepronota1hindan- gles.AfterdescribingQ.smetana1(UENo,1995,p 94,figs.1-3), Ihadanopportunity tovisittheNaturhistorischesMuseumBaseland tocomparebothQ.s,netanaiandthe presentspecieswiththeholotypeofQ excent,-lc1lsDEuvE(1992a,p 354;1992b,p. 183,figs 22-23). Itwas foundastheresultthatQ.s,;tetanal ismorecloselyrelatedto thetypespeciesthanQg1obipenntsis,thoughallthethreebelongtothesamelineage. Toour presentknowledge, thethreespeciesofQuemnect1-ectlusoccuron threedif- ferentmountainsthatareconsiderablydistant fromoneanother,butotherspeciesof thesamegenusmustbefoundontheinterveningmountainsifwecanlocategoodnat- ural foreststhat areindispensable for theexistenceof thesespecializedhumico1ous trechines. AswasalreadymentionedintheNotes following theaccount ofAgonotrechus farkac1,SMETANA'scollectingsiteC41isamixedbroadleavedandconiferousforeston Mt. Xue Shan.
