WawuShanisafamoustablemountainlyingonthebordersofHong'yaXianand YingjingXianin central Sichuan,SouthwestChina. Itstandson theDaxiangLing Mountains, and isabout 40km distant to the west-northwest in a beeline from Mt. cruelShan.Thetablemountainissurroundedbyverticalcliffsmorethan t,000mhigh attheeasternandsouthernsidesandextremelysteepslopesattheothersides.Itstable topis formedattheelevationof2,700to2,800m,andiscoveredwithAbles forest withthickundergrowthsofarrow-bamboosandvariouskindsofRhododendrontrees. Mt.WawuShanisprotectedasanationalnaturereserve,andisregardedbyTaoistsas asacredplace,sinceLaozi(orLaotzu),thefounderofTaoism,issaidtohavespenta secludedlifeonthetabletopof thismountainandgoneup to theheavenridinga crane It isnoteasytomakesatisfactoryco11ectingsonthetabletopofWawuShan, sjncethefloorsoftheAblesforestsarethicklycoveredwithentangledrootsofa「「oW- bamboosanddeadleaves.Itispossibletomakesiftingsinthebamboothickets,pa「tiC- ularlyunderRhododend1-o1, trees,butbeetleslivingunderstonesonclayey9「ound,en- dogeanformsjnparticular,cannotbeexpectedinsuchanenvironment.Ba「e9「oundS arefoundonlyontrajlsandonthebanksofnarrowstreams,butallthet「ailsa「eti9htly pavedwithslatesca 30x l00cm insize,whichcannotbereadily replacedto thei「 orlgjna1posjtjonwhenturnedover.BanksofnarrowstreamsareusuallyverySteepo「 vertjca1,andveryfrequentlyrocky,sothattheyarenotfavourablefOr1oOkin9fo「t「e- 14 Shun-lobiUI_No chinebeetles.Undersuchcircumstances,wewerecompelledtoexaminethegrounds beneaththepavement,andmovedmorethan200slates. Thiswasapainstakingand time-consumingwayoftakingraretrechines,but fourspecimensofthreenewspecies tobedescribedinthepresentpaperwerefoundoutbythismethod. Ofthefournewspeciestobedealtwith,twobelongtotwodifferentsubgeneraof thegenusEpaphiopsls.Theyareprimarilyhumico1ousinnature,butatenera1speci- menofthelargerspeciesofthetwowasfoundinacellmadeofyellowclaybeneatha slate.Aswillbenotedlater,thisspecies,tobenamedE.11mlla1,seemstobeausual inhabitantoflower placesthanthetabletop. 0neof theremainingtwospecies isa memberofthegenusSinot1-echlama;twospecimensofthisspecieswere found from beneathslatesonthetrail,andtheotheronewastakenbysiftingdeadleavesaccumu- latedatthesideofthetrail.Thelastspeciestobedescribedisananophthalmicendo- geanspecies,alsofoundfrombeneathaslate.Wehavevisitedthetablemountainfour times, intheearlysummerandtheautumn,andcarefullysearched foradditionalspeci- mensofthenon-humico1ousspecies,aboveallmalesoftheendogeanone. 0urefforts were,however,notrepaidwithanyofthethreespecies.Sincethemountainisnoteasy ofaccess, Ihavedecidedtointroduceallthesenewspeciesintoscienceinthepresent paper.Theabbreviationsemployedhereinarethesameasthoseexplainedinprevious papersofmine. Thisisaproblematicalspecieswhosetrueaffinity isnotcertainat the presentmoment. Infacies,itcloselyresemblescertainJapanesespeciesofPseudepa- phlus,buttheresemblancemayhaveresultedfromconvergenceseeingthatthepresent speciesdiffersfromJapaneseonesinthemodeofelytra1striationandconformationof themalegenitaIia. 0ntheotherhand,therestillremainsapossibilitythatE. lmu1・alisa true relativeofJapanesemembers; inthatcase, thedifferencesmayhavedeveloped duringlongisolation.Furtherinvestigationsareneededforclarifyingitstruestatus. Unfortunately,onlytheholotypeofthisnewspeciesis fullymature,theremain- ingfivebeingmoreorlesstenera1.Thespecimensofthetypeserieswerecollectedina deciduousbroadleaved forestat theleftsideof theShuangdongXiRiverbysifting deadleavesaccumulatedonarathersteepslope.Thelocalityisabout1,440mlowerin altitudethanthatattheeasternsideofthetabletop.ThematuremalewastakeninOc- tober,whilethetwotenera1femalesweretakeninJune.Judging fromthe factthatall thespecimenscollectedinJuneatthetypelocalityandtwootherlocalitiesaremoreor lesstenera1,emergenceofthistrechineseemstotakeplaceearlyinthesummer,even thoughitismainlydistributedinmiddlealtitude.Aswasnotedintheintroductjonof thispaper,theonlyspecimentakenonthetabletop,3.60mminthelengthofbody, Wasfoundinasmallclayceilbeneathaslateonthetrail.Itagreeswellwiththetype seriesthoughtheelytraaresomewhatbroader.Thestandardraljosare:pw/Hw 148, PW/PL 146,PW/PA t46,PW/PB128, PB/PA1.16, EW/PW 143, EL/PL 2.80, EL/EW133.
