 on  agile  adoptions.  No   matter  how  well  or  how  poorly  you’ve  done,  I  honor  your  efforts,   intentions,  and  everything  we’ve  learned  together.  You’ve  helped  me  to   continually  improve  my  agile  coaching  and  servant  leadership.       Specifically,  I  want  to  thank  my  ex-­‐colleagues  from  iContact.    Jeff   Sutherland  has  talked  for  years  about  hyper-­‐productive  agile  teams.  It’s   never  been  clear  to  me  what  magic  dust  makes  regular,  high,  or  hyper   performing  agile  teams.  Is  there  a  secret  metric  or  a  specific  percentage   increase  in  productivity?  I  honestly  don’t  think  so.       However,  I  do  think  agile  done  well  has  a  particular  ‘feel’  to  it—in  teams   that  are  approaching  “being  Agile”  in  their  mindset,  daily  activities,  culture,   and,  more  importantly,  their  results.       For  2  ½  years,  I  was  fortunate  and  lucky  enough  to  help  build  and  coach   just  such  a  set  of  teams  at  iContact.  In  many  ways,  I  wouldn’t  be  the  coach  I   am  today  without  the  opportunity  to  partner  with  this  group.  It  was  a   distinct  privilege  to  work  with  such  fine  “agilistas”.  From  where  I  sit,  we   were  very  much…hyper-­‐performing!     iContact  was  also  the  place  where  I  first  met  my  co-­‐conspirator  in   developing  many  of  the  ideas  within  this  book.  I  still  remember  the  day   when  I  interviewed  Mary  Thorn  for  a  Director  of  Quality  Assurance   position.  She  was  an  absolute  and  wonderful  find.  She  was  knowledgeable,   skilled,  and  very  passionate.  She  was  also  a  natural  leader.  In  fact,  she  was   almost  too  good  during  the  interview!    I  actually  recall  having  to  “slow  her   down”  when  we  spoke  about  early  initiatives  and  challenges  for  her  role.       Well,  fast  forward  to  today.  Mary  and  I  have  become  more  than   colleagues—we’ve  become  good  friends.  I  admire  Mary  and  believe  that   her  contributions  to  this  book  make  it  all  the  more  valuable  –  in  the  “real   world”.  Thanks  for  we  lost  our  beloved  dog,  Bentley.  We  love  ALL  of  our  animals   dearly  but  Bentley  held  a  special  place  in  our  hearts  and  our  family.  He  was   the  quintessential  protector  of  our  home  and,  after  we  lost  Foster,  he  was   alone  in  these  efforts.  Bentley,  our  lives  (and  this  book)  are  better  for   knowing  you.         I’m  quite  positive  he  had  a ........................................................................................................................142 10 || Forward Forward I’ve  been  consulting,  teaching,  and  coaching  software  testing  for  the   better  part  of  two  decades.  I’m  a  software  developer  by  training,  so  it   would  be  fair  for  you  to  ask—why  are  you  writing  a  book  about  agile   testing?       First,  many  years  ago  I  had  the  opportunity  to  move  from  a   development  leadership  role  to  a  testing  leadership  role.  Believe  me,  it   was  quite  a  bit  different,  and  much  more  challenging,  than  my   development  role.  One  of  the  things  I  decided  early  on  was  that  I   couldn’t  “lead”  testers  if  I  didn’t  understand  them  and  the  profession  of   testing.     Therefore,  I  became  a  student  of  software  testing  in  all  its  forms.  I  didn’t   pretend  that  I  understood  it.  Instead,  I  listened  to  my  teams  and   learned.  I  attended  courses,  read  quite  a  lot,  and  practiced  testing.  After   a  number  of  years,  I  felt  that  I’d  earned  sufficient  chops  to  call  myself  an   “honorary”  tester  and  test  leader.  At  this  juncture,  I  feel  I’ve  got  as  good   a  handle  on  software  quality  and  testing  as  I  do  on  software   development.       But  beyond  the  understanding,  I  achieved  a  newfound  and  lasting   respect  for  the  art  and  science  of  software  testing.  I  find  it,  and  the   people  doing  it,  to  be  incredibly  bright,  focused,  and  valuable  within   software  teams.  But,  not  everyone  holds  that  opinion  –  particularly  in   the  agile  community.     Therefore,  my  motivation  in  writing  this  book  is  three  fold:     1. Software  Testing  is  a  profession  AND  a  craft.  It  is  as  deep,  rich,   and  challenging  as  software  development.  I  want  to  honor  the   folks  who  have  selected  this  professional  path.  In  a  word,   Testers  “Rock”!
